Re: Smoking...There's lots of things in life that are bad for people ...we don't force them not to partake in those(Original post by Presenttime)
You wouldn't force someone to smoke because its bad for them. You would force someone not to smoke because its good for them.
Hmm i think this may be the ... fifth ...sixth ...no eleventyseventh time this discussion has happened on TSR ... -

Re: Smoking...
Mmm my sister, my parents, and a lot of their friends smoke. I've been a passive smoker all my life, and when I was younger I tried a cigarette a couple of times, to be "cool" etc. What people do to their own bodies doesn't bother me, if they want to smoke then that's fine by me. I do understand why some non-smokers can have a real problem with it though, even if they overreact a little too much.

Re: Smoking...
I understand why people like it, and I understand why others hate it. Personally I think it's pretty horrible - it makes your hair, clothes, mouth, house etc smell nasty. It makes your teeth yellow. It causes heart disease. It discolours the walls in your house. It gives you many types of cancer. It causes birth defects if you smoke whilst pregnant. It causes erectile disfunction. It's very expensive. It ages your skin and gives you wrinkles. It is one of the leading causes of health problems in the developed world and you pay for this luxury?!
I can understand older people who started smoking before it was known how bad it was for you, and now find it extremely hard to give up. What I don't understand is young people nowadays who are fully aware of the dangers and yet still decide to start smoking. On the one hand you can say, "it's their body, it's their choice". But it doesn't just affect the smoker themself. Your friends and family will also be breathing in small amounts of your smoke, which adds up over time. My uncle doesn't smoke, but he lives with my gran, who does, and he is now suffering from health problems because of the passive smoking. Also I get angry at parents who smoke in their house where children stay. That is not ok. Also the strain that smokers put on the NHS due to their multitude of present and future health complaints.
Having said that, I'm not one of these annoying people who do the over-the-top coughing when somebody is smoking nearby. Unless they are blowing it directly in your face, it's not THAT bad

I am a smoker and I know the negatives and I know people don't like it but it was my choice and I look back at it now and I don't regret it. Before I started smoking I was a total anti-smoker and I never understood why people done it and now I understand and I just wish people wouldn't criticise my choices mainly when some of them gave never tried it themselves. The ones who have smoked and quit I do listen to but like my mate at work said ex smokers are the worst type of smoker because they dictate that other people shouldn't smoke because of all the reasons why they quit (he is an ex smoker). I guess I just dislike people that say smoking is soo bad and then they are doing other things that are just as unhealthy. I know that smoking is the number one legal unhealthy thing but obesity and alcohol are close and you don't get people always complaining about those problems.

Re: Smoking...You say he/she wouldn't force anyone to smoke but by them smoking anywhere near anyone else they effectively are making other people smoke by breathing in the fumes. I seriously doubt they go out to an open field away from everyone every time they want to smoke...(Original post by EmilyAl)
I don't smoke, but I've got a friend who smokes and we were talking about anti-smokers, and he made a good point that he wouldn't force people into smoking, so why should they force him out of it. Anyone got any personal feelings towards smoking? -
Re: Smoking...I don't have a problem with people that do things that are only bad for their own health but as soon as you get people smoking near other people, forcing them to have their health compromised I think there is a real issue.(Original post by Doswell93)

Obesity and drinking (generally) dont have an impact on other peoples' health. -
Re: Smoking...
I think that as long as you are a considerate smoker (i.e. you smoke outside, use ashtrays where appropriate, get rid of your cig butts, don't bring your last mouthful of smoke back indoors etc.) then people shouldn't give you a hard time. At the end of the day, you would be hard pressed to find a smoker who isn't aware of the negative health implications.

Re: Smoking...Indeed, but the chances of getting lung cancer from 'a few' cigarettes per day is minimal - you'd need to be on 20+ per day for a very long time in the vast majority of cases.(Original post by Educate95)
