Should I mention this in my personal statement?
At the end of year 9, my mum died suddenly. It was quite traumatic and pretty much turned my life upside down. It impacted my life a lot - I changed schools, changed where I lived, who I lived with, etc. Anyway, I went on and did well at gcse and worked really hard at AS, and am applying for university this year. Do you mention this type of thing in your personal statement? Or maybe teacher's reference? Or shouldn't it be included at all? Thanks.

Re: Should I mention this in my personal statement?I am sorry to hear this. Hope you are doing alright. If I were you I would definitely ask my referee to mention it in the reference. I would leave my PS to "subject-related" stuff only. That way admission boards will see that you have a strong mind and that despite the very difficult things you must have gone through, you are ready for university and still love your subject.(Original post by chemistrie)

Re: Should I mention this in my personal statement? It didn't affect my results, because I still managed to do well, but I think that it should be kind of taken into consideration seeing as though it had a big impact on my life.(Original post by Pardesi)
teachers reference but only if you think your results were affected by it -
Re: Should I mention this in my personal statement?Well you should tell your tutor to mention it, your own ps is limited to 4000 characters and you will find it diffucult to get everything in, so leave this to you tutor.(Original post by chemistrie)

Re: Should I mention this in my personal statement?
The same thing happened to me and I didn't mention it on my personal statement- like the other replies say, it's really only for academic stuff and the teacher's reference is where that sort of thing should go, although they didn't mention it on mine. If your results were good then do you need to mention it as an extenuating circumstance? idk
