Anyone here living in Sherburn Village?
I am trying to understand how easy is to commute from Sherburn Village to the city centre and then to Stockton. Anyone living there or had that experience, especially in the Winter amid the snow and the havoc? thanks!

Well, mainly just because in my three undergraduate years at Durham, I've never lived more than 40 minutes walk from anywhere I want to go - Sherburn's an hour away from town! And if you're getting one bus into town, then a bus to Stockton every day, it sounds a bit unpleasant.

    Thank you
Maybe someone here that has lived or is living there could share what is like.

How many buses would that involve? Most students find just getting the bus from Durham to Stockton to be a pain so if you're trying to synchronise 2 or 3 buses you could find yourself wasting a lot of time at bus stops. If you can afford it, I would really recommend getting a (cheap) car and just driving to Stockton, it's much faster than the bus and you can completely control your timetable so you don't sit around waiting for buses.

You'll be able to see more of the North East if you have a car too.

I assume all buses go through the Bus Station on North Road, so it'd probably be two to get to Stockton. Or one bus, followed by a short walk, then the X1.

I thought of that and I had a post here asking where could I get a cheap car, but had no replies... I guess I have to go and search

Hi there, Sherburn Village has 3 different buses directly to bus station, passing Gilesgate, Leazes Rd, etc, with nice monthly discounts. It stops on the bay next to the one to take X1.

Houses there aren't cheaper than the ones at the city centre, but they are better that the ones agencies have available for students.
And since by now I had 9 rude agencies, 3 scammers, including one from Africa and 4 private landlords offering houses in a terrible condition, I am happy to take 2 buses, since there isn't a proper alternative.

Do you mean an hour's walk, as Sherburn is only just outside the city and no more than a 20 minute journey by bus? An hour on the bus, in that approximate direction, would take you as far as Sunderland.

I have not commuted from Durham to Stockton, but I did commute from the town I'm originally from (Ryton, Tyne and Wear - it was where Curly and his wife moved to in Coronation Street :awesome: ) to Durham from 2004-2007. This involed a bus into Newcastle and then train to Durham so it took a little longer than Sherburn to Stockton does. It did get tiring after the first year and my life was 500% better once I was able to move into Durham. However, if just doing this for one year, I think it's manageable.

My ex-supervisor at Durham commutes from Edinburgh (by train, I think) and a potential supervisor at Newcastle (should I end up there for postgrad) commuted from North Wales to Newcastle and back three times a week (by car and plane). Sherburn to Stockton is child's play, especially as the X1 bus is free for students.

Snow probably won't be much of an issue, though winter weather is always predictable so it does need to be taken into account. We have only really had two years of heavy snowfall, and that was the years the entire country was experiencing the same (2009 into 2010 and then the following year). In the last 15 years ago there has either been no snow at all, with winter quite mild and a continuation of autumn, or moderate to heavy snow for a day or two in January or early February. I can only remember public transport being severely affected one day in 2009-2010, as I was heading home for Christmas and got caught in the traffic. All routes in and out of the city got closed. Fortunately trains were running (and buses were fine in Newcastle).

Sorry, forgot to specify that - I'm so used to walking that I forget other people have different judges of time/distance!
