Do universities look at UMS?
I'm kinda new here so here goes.
Say there are two candidates, candidate A and B.
Candidate A gets 85% in all AS modules and candidate B gets 95% in all AS modules (presuming they do the same subjects and apply to the same universities for the same course).
Would universities use UMS to differentiate between them (if needed to) or would they both have an equal chance? depending their interviews/PS/extra curricular activities. -
Re: Do universities look at UMS?
They can't if all they use is UCAS. As far as I know, Cambridge is the only university which sees your UMS scores, and that is because you enter them into their SAQ form. Sometimes (quite rarely) a university might stipulate UMS in an offer, but that's not to say that they can see your UMS scores when you apply.
Anyway, usually in these "candidate A and B are identical except in this really tiny way" scenarios, the university would either give both or neither an offer. -

Re: Do universities look at UMS?Correct, unless there are any I don't know of that require additional information beyond UCAS (but I don't think there are).(Original post by Imcomingforyou)

If you have really good UMS then you could always mention it in your Personal Statement or get your referee to mention it. -
Re: Do universities look at UMS?I believe a couple of top end unis also ask for UMS? I remember seeing something from UCL, have a google you might find it(Original post by nuodai)

But generally you're right - only Cambridge say they'll ask for UMS.

Re: Do universities look at UMS?It's possible that there are others beyond Cambridge -- it's been a few years since I applied so things have probably changed since then. I suppose the point is that if a uni sees your UMS then you'll know about it (because you'll have been the one giving them the information).(Original post by Junaid96)

Re: Do universities look at UMS?
As has been said above, they only have your actual grades to go on unless you specify them in another part of your application.
The time UMS does have some sort of sway is on A Level results day where if you've missed your offer then they might be more lenient if you have high UMS and are only a couple of marks from the grade you needed. -
Re: Do universities look at UMS?Yeah you're right - Cambridge always make you give them in the SAQ, whereas others might ask you e.g. your maths modules later on if you're applying for maths.(Original post by nuodai)

I don't think they can see your UMS scores, but some universities request them specifically, UCL for example. -
Re: Do universities look at UMS?No(Original post by Nick_)
If your ums is high in all subjects, like over 95%, then would it be worth mentioning in personal statement as the universities wouldn't otherwise know?
Any statements like that belong in your reference - if you say it it sounds like boasting, if your referee says it it sounds like praise.
But generally you're right - only Cambridge say they'll ask for UMS.
