I'm sure I already have adobe flash, in fact I've just updated to the latest version. I'm using IE9 and chrome and on both I didn't require a plug-in to play youtube videos, how comes firefox is acting in this way?

Flash installs itself as a plugin on a per browser basis.

I don't remember needing to do that for chrome or ie9, youtube videos could already be played as soon as I installed chrome, there wasn't any message on the browser telling me to install a flash plug in

Perhaps then you're using the HTML5 version of YT on those browsers then.

how would I know if I'm using HTML5 version of youtube on my browsers?

yeah but just yesterday I got an adobe flash pop-up asking if I would like to update to the latest version, so wouldn;t this mean I already have flash (not just chrome flash) which should enable flash content to be seen on any browsers I use?

I doubt it then!

As I say - each install of Flash per browser is handled separately. If Flash for IE is updated Flash for Chrome will still need to be updated.

when I got the adobe flash update pop-up, it didn't say it was for ie9 or chrome. I assumed it was a single piece of software that could be used for all the browsers

Chrome has the flash plugin built into it. I believe Firefox cannot do this as it would not be compatible with their open source licence that firefox is released under. Internet Explorer uses a different type of plugin than any other browser. If you go on the Adobe website and try to download flash, it should have two different versions - one for IE and one for other browsers.

If your computer is not one that you built yourself, its likely that the OEM preinstalled Adobe Flash, along with some other useful software, and a ton of stuff that no one would ever want on their computers
