    Student finance, separated parents.
Hi, I phoned Student finance today as my application has been being 'processed' for the past couple of months. Turns out they need evidence to prove my parents are separated.

I didn't get round to asking how to do so but my mum's going to phone them up later.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    Is there a cost involved?

How soon can this evidence be provided?

    Thank you!

    Never happened with me.

They only wanted to know how much this house which I live in predominantly earns which I just got Mum to fill out. I would expect that there is nothing wrong with your application but maybe your parent ticked a wrong box or something when filling out the form. Never heard of this before and I know quite a few people with separated parents

I had this exact problem, when I rang up they asked me to send either a Decree Nisi or a letter from a solicitor to prove the seperation!

I told them I could provide neither and I had a very snotty reply and was told this was the only way to prove it. In the end I went to citizens advice and they said sending a council tax bill showing single occupancy or a letter from the council stating who lives in the household is enough to prove the seperation.

    Hope this helps

My dad was asked to provide evidence he is single- as he is divorced he sent in a decree Nisi, but if your parents arent actually divorced, just seperated you need either a council tax bill showing the 25% discount your mum recieves for being the only adult in the house (providing no other adults live there) thats free if you can provide it. Or a letter from a solicitor stating that your parents are seperated- the solicitor probally will charge for this. Evidence can be provided as soon as you can obtain it.

I can't prove separation with council tax discount letter as my older brother lives with us and so we dont get 25% discount. They wouldn't accept tax credits showing my mum was claiming as individual not as part of couple either. Thinking about letter from electoral register backed up with copy of passport (register doesn't show dates of birth) to show that other adult occupant is not my dad. Anyone tried this?
