Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan - Help please.Hey all, firstly, thanks for reading.
I'm soon to start my dissertation, having selected the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, looking at the Politburo's motivations for the invasion and was hoping those of you who are wiser than myself could help.
My argument is going to take up the classic realpolitik vs ideology debate, but will eventually conclude 'on the fence' (this was advised by my tutor), do you think this is a good decision?
What do you think were the key Soviet motivations for the invasion? I'm currently considering the failing of Pres. Amin, the location of a militant Islamic nation next to the Soviet Union and also the geographical importance of a superpower foothold in this part of the world.
