Canadian Student Applying to UK
Hi,
I'm a Canadian student applying for 2013 entry to medicine but Ill be starting university this September and so Im limited for options: a lot of medical schools do not consider applicants who are studying on a different course: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...fferent_Course
So my options are the following: BSMS, Glasgow, Leicester, Newcastle, Peninsula, Exeter, QUB, Soton, St. Andrews
I really like Leicester based on what I have researched but besides the rankings I have looked at online I don't know much about the reputation of the universities because there are some things you'd only know if you live in the area. So I was wondering if someone could give me more information on these universities and which you think would be the best, I'm looking for more of a 'mixed' learning style and have a mid 90 average from a Canadian High School. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! -
Re: Canadian Student Applying to UK
I can't tell much about medicine but if I know that Glasgow offers the better international experiences(there are lots of EU students since they don't have to pay fees, including me!)
You might want to consider that aspect other than just your course, most of your options seem to have a great reputation(and you don't need to live in the area, just go check the unis websites!) -
Re: Canadian Student Applying to UK
St Andrews is one of the most prestigious and well reputed universities in the UK, regularly securing a place among the top 10 universities nationally (according to domestic league tables like the Guardian, Times, Sunday Times & The Independent). It also has one of the highest proportions of international students, majority of whom come from N.America. For international reputation, though, The U of Glasgow is probably ahead of the others.

Re: Canadian Student Applying to UK
On the wiki page, there should be loads on info on the schools and what teaching styles they use. Also, check out the thread 'Pros and Cons of your medical school' to see what the students have to say about their medical school.
In terms of ranking - the UK medical schools are all up-to-par with the standards. Those league tables and rankings don't really tell you much about the university at all.
Take the UKCAT and see how it goes - then you can sort out what schools you should apply for.
Best of luck!
p.s. you might want to check out other threads as many ask the exact same question over and over again. That way, you'll get your answers relatively quicker. -
Re: Canadian Student Applying to UKHow about Leicester as an international reputation? Because as of right now I'm thinking of Leicester, Newcastle, St. Andrews, and Glasgow. I will definitely do more research on all of them but those seem like reputable schools and also nice places to live in, especially Glasgow! Thanks for your help(Original post by AviG123)

Re: Canadian Student Applying to UKIs there a specific wiki page on thestudentroom? If so do you mind referring me to it? With regards to choosing unis I've been looking at Leicester, Newcastle, Glasgow, and St. Andrews and the reason I'm trying to eliminate early on is so that I can tailor my personal statement accordingly because I heard that some universities require specific things to be discussed in the personal statement. Do you know where you could find that type of information? And yes my UKCAT is actually a little while from now, September 21st, so I have a lot of time. Thanks for your help and I'll definitely check the thread!(Original post by doctork2)

To a certain extent, you're right. Universities want certain things from their applicants. However, your personal statement, since it is ONE personal statement rather than 4 for each of the universities, should be albe to cover all of the aspects that ANY medical schools want from their applicants. What if you don't get a good UKCAT score? What are you going to do then? Since you haven't done your UKCAT yet, just keep those options in mind, but don't narrow it down to four choices already. If you go to the universities' websites or the medical schools' faculty pages, you should be able to find the entry criteria or non-academic criteria section.
Oddly enough, the universities you have mentioned were some of the univerisites I was considering this time last year.
All of the medical schools in the UK are up to standard and are fantastic. Wish you best of luck with your application!

Re: Canadian Student Applying to UKYou're right, I shouldn't limit my options completely just yet so I'll look into all nine of my options and go from there. Which did you end up choosing last year and where did you end up going?(Original post by doctork2)

and yeah i did the MMI, it was actually ... simple and there is probably no real way to prepare for it =/ -
Re: Canadian Student Applying to UKOh I am too, I live in Oakville! That's amazing, I'm planning to apply to Newcastle too. Any tips? Hahah I'm really hoping on getting into England because I like their medical system as opposed to Canada's 4 year bachelor program. That sucks that you can't prepare for the MMI but I guess I'll worry about that when/if it comes.(Original post by Goku15)

I was just wondering, as a Canadian applicant how did you go about the interview process? The problem is if I hopefully get an interview offer, I can't tell the other unis to arrange my interview dates around the same time if they haven't offered me one yet. Is there any way to avoid the chance of having to go back and forth for interviews? Thanks! -

What was your UKCAT score if you don't mind me asking? I'm also applying to Newcastle as a Canadian and am curious if the international cut offs are the same as for home students. -
