Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
Hey im trying to currently save up for freshers week and was just wondering how much people spent at freshers week/fortnight..?
Some people have said that your loan might not go in for a while and can get delayed so im assuming for food and things you need some money in the first few weeks, then for the actual fun stuff and ALCOHOL you need more money.
So the question is how much did you spend?

Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
I went thinking £300 would not even be enough but I only ended up spending £50-£70 and had a great time. Lots of free Dominos pizza at freshers fair, even more free pizza and free beer was supplied at events the uni held throughout the week. Chip in with house mates to buy booze and more pizza which would cost you about £3/4 each. Nights out if you live on campus will be very cheap especially if you get drunk quickly.
The most expensive thing was the tickets to the freshers ball which were about £20 each I think, but worth it!. -
Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
can easily spend 2-300 just on nights out for freshers week. first year was the cheapest for me as i had a freshers band and loads of wages to burn, 2nd and 3rd year has destroyed me financially and i was skint by the saturday on both occasions. this year, with it being my last freshers as an undergrad, will be my most successful tactically if i make it out each night as i plan to

Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
I spent just over £100 on nights out in Freshers week and I went out every night.
I did however spend the £200 I'd saved plus went like £150 into my overdraft during the two week before freshers at we moved in really early before loans.Last edited by PinguN18; 03-08-2012 at 17:59. -

How on earth could you ever spend £200 on a night out while at uni!
Get some drinks in before night out
Pre drink a'plenty
Go out, pay to get in to destination
Get cheap but high alcohol content drink at the club/venue of choice to keep ones stability and common sense at bay
Get home, have a take away
Go to bed.
That was how things were done my way, £50 was an expensive night! -

Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
I spent between £10 and £15 a night in freshers week, closer to £10 most nights, and I seem to remember a bit less on another; it worked out to around £50 for the week. I didn't drink masses though, only really a few drinks over a night, because I'm not a fan of being really drunk, and coaches were provided into town for the week so I only needed a taxi back which was only about £1.50 because I was sharing with 7 others. Free entry to all the clubs also made it a bit cheaper, as well as drinks offers, a night out was more expensive after freshers week, by at least £5-£10.

Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
I went out for the 7 nights.
3 bottles of vodka = £36
5 bottles of Lemonade = £2.50
2 bottles of wine = £8
That's pre drinks for the week done..
In the clubs it was £2 entry so that's £14 and then each night I had about 6 shots so that's £42.
That's gross totalling it up like that.
So just over a hundred for alcohol and then like £30 for a week's food. Not to mention cinema, bowling and all that jazz.
I'm saving £200 for this years freshers. Simply because I now drink like a fish. -

i meant for the whole week.
I had a massive public brain fart reading your original comment, didn't I!
Sorry about that.
In that case, 200/300 is a good estimate! -
Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
Depends how much of a lightweight you are! Me personally,
I am a lightweight, so a 70cl bottle of vodka would last me 2-3 sometimes streching 4 nights easily and I didn't really buy any drinks in clubs maybe a few and entrance was free in freshers!
Food I probably spent about £60 on food, but also fancy dress costumes probably cost me around £30 and then some money on activities/bus fare/taxi etc.
All in all I'd say £150 is a comfortable amount. You could do freshers easily on around £10 a night if you budget yourself, but why not go crazy it's freshers! budget the rest of the year :P
Bare in mind I had a freshers fortnightLast edited by ellasmith; 04-08-2012 at 12:04. -

It's so hard to believe a medic fresher loves booze alot!!!
We do. We do.
Though just to add more context to my post beforehand our med society put on more events for us, so we had the uni freshers events aswell as our own course ones which may explain the cost!
Oh and joining a sports team is a sure way to spend alot. -
Re: Freshers - the ACTUAL costs?
Should probably bare in mind the cost of joining clubs/societies when you're here. Can be quite pricey (especially the main sports), but most should be reasonably priced. Usually somewhere between free and £25, but some can go as high as £100-£150.
Also, try and pick up as much free stuff as you can and as many vouchers as possible. If you take one, do a lap of the room/union and pick up another set of vouchers. Will make your year a lot cheaper!!
