What can I do with 5000 pounds to turn them into a bigger amount? Invest/buy/deposit?
So I have 5000 pounds that I would like to use to turn them into a bigger amount.

What options do I actually have? I've heard about online brokerage firms, but having looked at some of them I am not sure if I can just jump into investment into papers without at least basic financial education.

    Any other ideas?

(obviously not interested in gambling, etc.)

    Thanks

£5000 isn't enough to make serious returns through 'safe bet' things like savings bonds, especially with interest rates as low as they are. You will only just be able to stay ahead of inflation even if you get a good interest rate.

It may be worth just keeping it available in an instant access savings account as a safety net, depending on your financial situation. You might use it to help out with living costs at uni, while unemployed or for unexpected expenses. When you rent your first property you will need to put down a deposit and at least a month's rent in advance, this could easily add up to thousands of pounds.

If you want to start investing your money yourself in things like stocks, bonds or forex, you need to be aware that you will need to make a significant and regular time investment if you want any hope of breaking even, let alone making money. Bear in mind that in the past, many of the premier hedge funds, employing a lot of very clever and extremely well renumerated people, have been outperformed by a computer selecting stocks at random.

Investing in share is one option. Im maybe going to run a practice competition with monthly cash prizes that would help you to learn if thats something you're interested in. Thread below

Put it into an ISA. Only invest if you know what you're doing, not that I'm questioning your capabilities.

Put 2.5k in a Nationwide Flex account which will pay you inflation-busting 5% for a year (though you have to recycle 1000 in and out a month)

Put it on Sprinter Sacre to retire unbeaten.

In all seriousness though, I would just keep it in an ISA. Interest rates are never going to be amazing, but at least you can make SOME profit whilst you figure out what you want to do. Whereas diving in with the sharks could cost you a lot of dosh.

    Hope this helps.

Put it in a ISA or put it into the premium bonds. They take the interest from the money, but it's safe, and if you win (it's like a big raffle each month) you can win anything from £25-1,000,000.

Alternatively, if you did want to invest it, I'd suggest TD Waterhouse, they do shares and stuff. My dad does it, and he just buys a few shares every now and again, and them sells them again for a profit, or takes a small loss if the share price doesn't go back up.

You need some zombie insurance; luckily for you I'm selling. Just transfer the 5000 into my bank account and I'll do the rest.
