Eyes Wide Shut.. Kubrick's best film?

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

I agree! I've never meet anyone else who agrees with me though.

I liked Eyes Wide Shut. But I wouldn't say that it's his best film though. I think that title goes to 2001 A Space Odyssey or A Clockwork Orange.

It was a great film, but 2001, Paths of Glory and Clockwork Orange were better, as were some of the others.

Nicole Kidman in that film was :coma:

I haven't seen all of his, but I think the shining is my favourite. So much intricate design. Didn't think much to a clockwork orange. Eyes wide shut was very good though, as were 2001 and full metal jacket.

Not seen it, but most people say it's not one of his best.

It's a great film. I would still rank A Clockwork Orange above it though.

Also, remember that Kubrick died before he was able to finish editing Eyes Wide Shut so we'll never quite know if it turned out as planned. He was a notorious pedant.

I do like Eyes Wide Shut but if I had to choose, I would say that either Lolita or A Clockwork Orange were my favourites.

I'd argue for Barry Lyndon personally, but it's pretty good. It's not better than 2001 or Paths of Glory or anything, but I think it's better than people give ('gave'? I'm not sure where everyone's at with the constant reappraisal of his initially lesser-liked films) it credit for, and unmistakeably Kubrick.

I love Kubrick and there's a lot to admire about EWS but it is definitely not his best. It looks great as you would expect from Kubrick, but is also turgid and overlong. How can an orgy be that boring ?

Also not helped by the casting. Kidman is annoying in a pretty minor role tbh, and Cruise is unintentionally hilarious. Btw is his character's habit of simply repeating the dialogue of the person he's speaking to intended as some kind of joke!? He was great in Magnolia though, from around the same period.

A Clockwork Orange is my favourite, and The Shining still manages to scare me a little,
but to be honest I think in each and every Kubrick movie there's fantastic elements in them all..
