How do you buy metal watches?
You know those watches with metal straps (see pic below), how does one go about buying one, because obviously the length of the straps are non-adjustable (unlike those plastic/leather straps), so what do?

do you go in and have your wrist size measured? what?

you can have links taken out... so they most definitely are adjustable.

so just go into a shop and buy one, then they'll normally adjust it for you

ok, so if the links can be taken out easily (presumbly they'll supply you with extra links), then I can just literally go in and buy it as it is, without having the strap adjusted or customised to the length of my wrist?

When you buy a watch with a metal bracelet, it will always be oversized, to fit the largest of wrists. You then take it into a jewellers or watch shop, and simply ask them to take a couple links out. They'll simply take a look at your wrist, and judge it by eye on how many links to take out and put one back in if its too tight. Costs about a fiver usually.

I think generally the watch comes with all the links in, and you take out the ones you don't need. I know that for me, my dad took them out himself (there were instructions) but not sure if that's just because my dad sees going into a shop as 'failure'! For my watch at least, there's a limit to the number you can take out, which is a problem for people with skinny wrists. Hope this helps.

Isn't this just done while you're buying the watch?

what I mean is, don't they (the place where you're buying the watch) adjust the watch for you?

As has been pointed out you can have links taken out,

but also on some of my watches there is a sort of pin thing in the catch (not sure if right term, but the buckle thingy) so you can tighten or loosen it my a little bit.

Sure I was able to adjust the position of the clasp on one of those (metal bracelet casio) hard to describe the mechanism, sort of a cam that squeezed the bracelet. Don't think removing links is necessary unless you're a bit ocd about having a 'tail' on the inside.

Some places will offer the service as well, but not all the time. There's a difference between simply selling a watch inside a box over the counter like you would at Argos, and having a watch specialist remove links on site (as well as provide other services). At Debenhams, they happened to have a watch department with a links fitting service on site which is complimentary for having bought the watch there, but otherwise if you buy the watch online for example, you'll need to take it to a Jewellers.

Yes, they have the department, but to my knowledge, they don't have a watch specialist on site at every Argos. It might be the case that they do at some, and they don't at others, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way, there's obviously a separation between the retail sale of a watch, and the service of removing links, changing batteries, mechanism maintenance etc.
