You could state it in your personal statement, am sue they would like that, it shows that you have an intimate understanding of medicine -
Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effectAnd I have an intimate understanding of electrics because my dad is an electrician. Just as I have an intimate understanding of what it feels like to have a vagina, because my mum has one and regularly describes its inner workings to me.(Original post by lilyobz)

Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effect"Unfortunately?"(Original post by rattusratus)
unfortunately this isnt America so we dont have legacys over here
That your parents were there should give your application more merit over things like ability, is a good thing?
OP: don't mention it, your likely to piss off someone off. If I heard that I'd think to myself, "Oh what's that? You want me to give you an offer because your parents went here? That just fine, here is some guy who did better than you academically, but his parents didn't come here, better give you a spot then you special little snowflake. Just kidding, you're sense of undue entitlement is annoys me *doesn't give you an offer*".Last edited by Piprod01; 07-08-2012 at 23:01. -
Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effect
im assuming no one gets in just off having a family member, but if its between to people with the same grades and similar extra activities then having knowledge of the uni and its processes could be a good thing, good enough to make them pick you over the other guy
and for the op it is unfortunate -
Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effecti assume you either havent applied to uni, this is a ludicrous suggestion(Original post by lilyobz)

If anything, it will come across as though you're only applying because your parents expected you to. -

Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effect
can't imagine it makes any difference at all these days - used to have some effect - there were a few at Med school in the 80's with me from seriously influential medical dynasties..
but having been involved in helping students get in / selection more recently am pretty sure it makes no difference -
Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effectDoubt it considering back when your mum was a student, Barts was an independent med school but then it merged with another med school (The London) and a few years after that came under the umbrella of a whole other university (QMUL). The various changes in staff, location and administration over the years make it unlikely that anyone would know about it much less bring it up in a hypothetical interview.(Original post by ocelot92)
Maybe a silly question, but who cares. My mother studied medicine in Barts, if I applied to Barts doing medicine, would they recognize this in anyway?
It would sound like she's looking for special treatment, which isn't cool.(Original post by lilyobz)

Re: Family studied in same university - will this have any effectNot in the UK I'm afraid. Shame really cause the whole legacies concept is pretty good I reckon. Alumni in the UK just don't seem to have that level of pride for their University/College like they do in the US that compels them to donate money.(Original post by ocelot92)
