Firstly congratulations on making the decision to study at University.
What subject are you hoping to study?
I'm also looking to go to University next year, and have already been to a couple of open days etc, and got a rough idea of where I'd like to go. I've based my choice so far on a mixture of things, including League Tables, Reviews, Open Days etc.

Figure out what you want to do a degree in then shop around.
Remember that all of the things that you see is their marketing as you're going to give them a LOT of money. Do your customer satisfaction research online too! -

I'm going to Lancaster University, which is consistently top 10 overall and one of the best for student satisfaction and languages. And great accommodation There are so many universities in the UK and you get 5 choices, there are a lot of factors you could take into account. It depends on what matters to you.

Re: Where do you study in the UK??I think that if you're an EU student you don't have to pay tuition fees in a Scotland university, but I'm not sure if you get maintenance loans or anything. I'm not entirely certain though, you can check that sort of thing out on www.direct.gov.uk(Original post by Kerry567)

that's right! as an EU student at university in Scotland, there's no tuition fees! and you'd probably find it fairly easy to get grants/loans for living expenses if you wanted to.(Original post by Kerry567)

Yeah, I'm a Scottish student, and they had the price of the course I'm hoping to do on a slide show at the applicants day - there's no way I could have afforded it! Plus, even if they do introduce fees, if it's done after your course starts you shouldn't have to pay anything. Generally, it's the same fees the whole way through the course, so in other words it should be free for you!(Original post by Kerry567)

As a Scottish student, I didn't even bother looking at the English unis, but I think that generally, fees are about £9000 a year.
As for your question regarding living expenses in Aberdeen/Edinburgh I think it truly depends on what area of the cities you're looking at! Halls are the best way to go, at least for the first year until you meet people to share a flat with! -

because I applied quite late, I never actually went to any open days, however the two unis I picked for my firm/insurance offered "applicants days" where you got a more detailed tour of the faculty you've applied to. I would definitely recommend going to any kind of open day, as they give you a feel for the uni that you just can't get unless it's firsthand! it also gives you an idea of what's available, which was again useful for me because I could have a look at the labs!(Original post by Kerry567)

Re: Where do you study in the UK??Take a look at the Russell Group universities if you're aiming high. There are many other great universities not on that list though! Take a look at the subject area you wish to study, look at the entry requirements, and make a list of the universities which appeal to you. University/Subject league tables aren't the best source of information, but by looking at a few you'll gain a general idea of the ranking of each university.(Original post by Kerry567)
