    Tonya Harding v Nancy Kerrigan

Two American figure skaters. When both were trying for the 1994 Winter Olympics team, Harding had associates attack Kerrigan's knee and put her out of the US championships. The US authorities then chose both for the Lillehammer Games and it turned into a media feeding frenzy.

Honourable mention must also go to Daley Thompson v Jurgan Hingsen. Daley Thompson was still making comments about him last night, 28 years later.

Not an Olympic rivalry, but the "Miracle Mile" Bannister v Landy at the Vancouver Commonwealth Games of 1954.
