Imperial - MSc Economics and Strategy for Business

Hi guys,

after a few months of silent reading, I have now finally made the effort to register myself and start the action.

First of all, I would like to explain my situation and the reason for this new Thread.

I just graduated at Oxford Brookes with a Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Business and Management, with the third best dissertation of my year. After my graduation, I decided not to apply for a Masters directly, but instead take a "gap year" to gain some hands on experience. I´m currently undertaking an internship at Mc Kinsey till december, and will do another one at Merryll from Januar on in corporate finance / M&A for 3 months. Moreover, I´m trying to do my GMAT at the same time, which is pretty difficult, considering the enormous working hours per day..

Anyway, my question is regarding the new Masters at Imperial in Economics and Strategy for Business. Has anyone heared anything about the program? Is it a good way of specialising for a career in consulting or are there better ways? What is the reputation of this degree? And what quality of teaching can I expect from Imperial? Please be realistic and take my "second class degree" into consideration. Do you think I would have a realistic/good chance to get accepted? Would it be beneficial to take the GMAT? I honestly cant really be bothered, as I simply don´t have the time at the moment. Could you give me any other hints or tips?

Anyway, I would appreciate some quality answers. Thanks for your help!

The fact that you call them "Mc Kinsey" and "Merryll" reduces your credibility to nil. McK don't recruit from Brookes - even Warwick, UCL and LSE grads are scarce in their circle. Also, Merrill don't do 3-month off-cycle internships in (and especially) M&A, if anything, it's more like 6 months...

With regards to the ECB Programme @ Imperial - there are numerous threads about it in this forum, use the search function! I personally wrote a pretty long response to a girl that asked the same question as you.

Sorry for my militant tone, but it seems like you have done zero reading on this and want other members to do the work for you. Your question has been answered multiple times before - learn how to use the search function.

From Imperial's website: "We do not require a GMAT or GRE score for this programme."

Rex, ts asked if it would be 'beneficial' to submit a GMAT given her 2.1 from oxford brookes, not if it was obligatory. my take is that a high/above average GMAT score may elevate ts' chances of gaining admission. TS, if you feel you have a strong CV (solid work exp and eca's) then i'd say don't bother with the GMAT. gd luck. also TS, no need to troll us with your gap year work exp.

First of all thanks for your answers, even though the tone could be more welcoming. Sorry for the spelling mistakes, but I was writing the opening post of this thread at the office of my current project client and I don´t really think the MD would like to see his consultants spending more time in the internet, than on strategic decisions on his company. Second of all, Rex Regis might be right considering the fact that McKinsey is not recruiting from Oxford Brookes in England, but this is not the case in Germany. What I didnt say is that I´m german and that I´m currently undertaking the internship in Frankfurt, where the office surely does recruit from Oxford Brookes! Thirdly, I cant really say whether Merril is recruiting off-cycle in London, but they do in Frankfurt. If you dont believe me, simply check their european/german careers website and you´ll quickly discover their 3 months spring interm programs. In addition to that it is very helpful, when you went to the same boarding school as the son of the former head of asset management europe. Suddenly they do offer internships of any lenght. How small-minded of you not to take other ways of applying for internships into consideration!!

Anyway, I understand your point and I will make more efficient use of the search function in future.

But there is no need to make use of such an offensive tone, when replying to new users. Or do you think people will be coming back to this forum, after being welcomed in such a disrespectful manner?

Hi Deilo. Interesting.

I think the GMAT is good to have, but not necessary if you can provide the grades. You'll probably spend a fair bit of time on the essays, and on the interview.

The general economy in the UK isn't so great at the moment, so I might also be considering to look for work in Germany after I graduate from Imperial. Maybe I should try for an internship where I can also write up my dissertation. I'm going for the MBA, by the way.
