Re: University Email!I'm not sure if accounts and mailboxes have been setup yet, but as a new user you should be using http://webmail.nottingham.ac.uk.(Original post by ggurl3)
Im so confused how do we access it once we register?
If it logs you in but says mailbox can't be found then there must be a problem with the new system; so use http://owa.nottingham.ac.uk

Re: University Email!
I tried but i get an error message saying:
This account can't be used to access Outlook.com
You're currently signed in with an Office 365 email account, which can't be used with Outlook.com. Please click here to sign out of your Office 365 account, then use another Microsoft account to sign in to Outlook.com (for example, your hotmail.com, live.com, or msn.com account).
I use a mac if that makes a difference! I'm really bad with this stuff

Re: University Email!Interesting. Basically, you're the year of guinea pigs, where Information Services is testing our new cloud email service. Once term starts, it'll be fine, but Microsoft having screwed about, it's made things quite difficult! I would suggest you email the IS student helpine and give as much info as possible - see http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/help/index.aspx.(Original post by ggurl3)

You can't change your username. That said, I can given you a breakdown of what your username means.(Original post by scbond)
Do we have to stick with the username given or can it be changed? Would've though initials and surname would be better than a random string of characters lol.
The first two characters identify your department within the University. For Computer Science, this is 'ps'; for the Students' Union staff, this is 'os', for example. The 'y' means undergrad, 'x' means postgrad, and 'z' means staff. The next 2-3 characters are your initials. If a username already exists for your initials, then you'll end up with a number at the end e.g. psydabc1. To be honest, you're unlikely to give out your University email address. There's no point giving it out to anyone given that in a couple of years time it'll be gone and you'll be back to your personal address!
Your email password should be the same as your password anywhere else. Bear in mind that there's a difference between an application login (e.g. 5241345) and a university login (e.g. psydabc)!(Original post by sumsum123)
I got my email but I have no idea whatsoever what my passwoord is? Did they give it to me and I forgot?
. I remember making a username and passwoord, not an email passwoord?

Re: University Email!Awesome! Thanks for explaining it. Only wo things now...how does lg stand for Geography and what are the complete settings for Mail on a Mac? I accessed the settings on the web version of Outlook and tweaked them to get incoming working but still can't get outgoing to work. Guessing it's because there's no TLS option in Mail?(Original post by DarkWhite)

Ugh, I'm not an Apple user, but I'd suggest trying the settings detailed in the iPad instructions - http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/docum...d-to-email.pdf. -
Re: University Email!Failing that, contact the Student IT Helpine! They must be quiet this time of year anyway(Original post by scbond)
Ok, cheers!

Re: University Email!
Allow me to dredge this post up from the past:
I think it's all still correct, except that they seem to have dropped the yeargroup letter in the last couple of years.(Original post by alex-hs)
First letter is your faculty, second is your school, third is your user type, 4th is your yeargroup (if your user type is Y, not applicable otherwise) and the rest is your initials, followed by a number, if someone else in your year and on your course has the same initials as you and is higher up the alphabet.
The first letter is:
A - Faculty of Arts
E - Faculty of Engineering
L - Faculty of Social Sciences, Law and Education
M - Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
P - Faculty of Science
[nb, this list is not exhaustive!]
2nd letter I can't be bothered to type out cos it'd take ages
3rd letter:
X - Postgraduate
Y - Undergraduate
Z - University Staff
The 4th letter is your yeargroup - Last year it was A, this year it'll be B (before that it was Z, Y, X etc). Postgrads and members of staff don't have the yeargroup letter, and thus the fourth letter is the first letter of their initials.
Also for some reason, postgrads only have their first and last initials (ie the initials of middle names are not used) which results in a lot more usernames with numbers at the end. Staff and undergrads have all their initials used, however.
I am thus PPYYAJP1 - P for Faculty of Science, P for Physics, Y for undergrad, Y for 2004 entry, AJP for my initials, and 1 because some bastard called Andrew Pearson nicked my proper username
And no, you can't change it - you're just going to have to live with it!
Also I think Education might be T (for historical reasons... presumably it wasn't always lumped in with Law & Social Sciences).Last edited by alex-hs; 04-09-2012 at 08:59. -
Re: University Email!Hi scbond,(Original post by scbond)

Would you mind sharing what settings you used in outlook?
I've been trying to access my mail through my iPhone and Thunderbird but it's proving pretty difficult.
Thanks for any assistance

Re: University Email!Haven't managed to get it working yet as something appears to be wrong. Contacted the support staff to ask an will post up the setting here when I hear back.(Original post by samstars)

Re: University Email!
Hey everyone, IS at the uni replied with some settings which still didn't work. It turns out though that you can only send emails using your uni account if you're connected to the SNS. If you need to send mail while off-campus or you won't be staying at halls such as Broadgate or Raleigh then the incoming settings shown in the Outlook accounts online will work, which is pod51016.outlook.com. For the outgoing server I'm having to use Gmail. This means that any replies you send will come from the Gmail account.
very helpful!
