I'd like to point out that the bus pass isn't free, the cost of the rent has simply gone up so you don't have to pay the £250 separately.

The bus paas is free, the price increase is due to the three extra weeks at Christmas, creating 37 week contracts instead of this year's 34.

Yeah, I think you get a free bus pass, but id like to be near the uni and not worry that I'm going to miss the bus to labs lol

Don't worry about missing buses, they're very regular and come every 10 minutes. It only takes around 20 minutes at the most to get to uni.

Can anyone tell me a little about The Lawns and Needler Hall? I'm having a little trouble deciding at the moment! I wanna know about the social life/accessibility and how close everything is (Library, nearest Sport's Centre etc).

Needler is only a 5 min walk from the Lawns (or two bus stops down) so there's barely any difference in accessibility as you will basically still need to get the bus everywhere. It's a few minutes closer to Cottingham village centre for basic needs but Cott is in walking distance of both the Lawns and Needler. They're both semi-catered too. The Lawns has the Lawns centre which hosts a gym and a bar which Needler doesn't have and there are more people at the Lawns so it definitely has a better community feel/social life.
In the first few weeks, all the extra people who haven't got a place in accommodation live on camp beds on the floor in Needler or share with people in Needler until accommodation is found for them which is another downside.
I haven't been there many times as I live at the Lawns but from what I can see it's pretty small and very old fashioned.
It really depends what you're after.

Ahh that makes it easier for me to decide then! Guess it's The Lawns for me! Won't have a hard time deciding which halls though cause the only self-catered is Nicholson Hall. Would you recommend spending the extra ££ to get an en-suite or not? How often do they clean the toilets and how's the toilet roll situation?

Also do we get to leave our stuff in accommodation over Christmas/Easter? They say we get to stay but I assume we have to pay a little extra?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: More questions. :P

^ There are limited spaces in Nicholson Hall (obviously, only so many people can live there) and it's extremely popular due to it being self catered. Make sure you apply as soon as accommodation opens else you may miss out (I applied for only Nicholson Hall and ended up in Reckitt, which is still on the lawns but semi-catered).

^ I wanted an en-suite and again didn't get it due to applying for accommodation late and I can honestly say it isn't as bad as it seems. The shared toilets have double roll dispensers and the bathrooms are cleaned/loo roll is added twice a week so you never run out and the bathroom never really gets dirty, they're pretty well cleaned. My friend has en suite and she hasn't had any great benefit over my flatmates and I. I am glad that I ended up sharing and saved the money.

^ You can leave your stuff, I have over this period and only came home with one suitcase of clothes and revision as I was travelling by train. If you want to stay you're not charged any extra as you have already been charged for it whether you stay or not (which I think is a bit lame but I'm pretty sure it's the same at most unis).

Do we have to pay the deposit when we apply for the accommodation or do we wait?

Ah, so when I apply I don't have to pay it? Its all so confusing haha
I'm stuck between Taylor Court and The Lawns, Taylor Court seems dead nice to me since it's self catered, en-suite and on campus bt the only thing holding me back from there is how everyone is saying it's pretty boring and only foreign/medical students. Is there anyone who's experienced Taylor Court and can tell me if there is many non-medical/foreign students that apply there? (I do realise it will be harder to make friends since there is less people, just want to know if there will be people I can socialise with, also I don't drink so I don't mind not being around a more party-ish atmosphere~)
anyone done the accommodation for september??

I don't think it's open just yet.
Hey

I'm looking at applying for the Student Houses, I would like a room with a basin. I just don't know whether to apply for the small room, or the medium room! I don't mind small, just I would like a bit of space to move around and I was just wondering if any of you could offer an insight into how cramped the small rooms are? I have visited, just it's been a few months and can't recall the size.

Thanks

Hey! I'm not actually at Hull University, but my boyfriend goes there and he's in Nicholson Hall. He really enjoys being self-catered and the facilities are fine (normal student digs). The only thing that I personally would comment on is it's distance from the University campus itself, as he has to get a bus every day (but then again my Uni is city based and I really love just being able to walk to all my lectures so maybe that won't be an issue for you!). There are a few little shops about a 10/15 minute walk down the road, or a quick bus ride so this isn't bad either!

All in all, I would say that it is a really nice place for a first year because you'll always be around people. And Hull is such a lovely Uni so well done on getting a place

If you have any other questions let me know and I can go give my boyfriend a call

Haha, don't worry!

And no the bus works well for him and it stops right in front of the accommodation so you have a minutes walk which is great. The bus timetables are very good too and are normally pretty reliable!

He had to pay for his bus pass this year, but I vaguely remember him having a bit of moan about how next year the Uni are paying for it so I think you might have it for free? (Better check that though, because when the bf starts to moan I am guilty of tuning him out! :P)
