Do I need a full birth certificate for student finance?

I opened my student finance account yesterday and the application stated that I need identification. I was born in the UK and lived here for the past eighteen years. My passport expired two years ago, however I have a birth certificate, which provides evidence of who I am. Will that be enough for student finance to know that it is indeed me doing the application?

Furthermore, the birth certificate is a short copy and doesn't state my parents name. Do you think that will be okay? Should I pay and renew for a new passport? How long does that take?

you use the long birth certificate if your passport ran out
