Peronal Statement History Advice - Books

Hi All,

I'm still a year away from applying for History at some Scottish Unis and noticed that a lot of successful previous personal statements for the course mention the numerous books and History publications they've read. I'm already subscribed to 'History Today' but was curious as to whether people had any advice on books to read about specifically European History (1850-) or Russian History (1850-)

I believe that for many universities you can look on there website to see if they have any modules relating to those topics. This often has a reading list attached for each topic. If that doesn't help, yet down to your local library. They should have some good books there and in the back there are suggestions for further reading.

From the top of my head, I believe James Joll (quite a good historian) wrote the book 'Europe since 1870: an international history'. The book investigates the ideas of socialism/communism, imperialism, industry, revolution and war. You may like it.

I would also recommend include E.H. Carr's 'What is history?'

On a side note, try looking at medieval history as well. Many students talk about their love for modern history, so reading medieval history may help you stand out.
