Flexible Combined Honours Enquiry

okay so...
I've applied and been accepted to do a BSC in Sociology at Exeter. But due to recent changes I really really want to do the flexible combined honours in Sociology && Psychology, which Exeter offers. The thing is when i called and asked if I could transfer (in February) I was told by administrators that it was too late, as psychology on flexible combined honours is closed.
ive spoken to alot of my teachers, friends and our career advisor and they're all advising me that I call Exeter on results day and apply for adjustment for the flexible combines in Soc and Psy (as my grades are HOPEFULLY going to be much greater than I thought at the beginning, maybe AAA?), and they may be more likely to take me as students may of had rejected them and so there is some space.

I just wanted to know if there is any students who had been in the same situation? or know any on who has and what their experience was like?

Its a shame, coz all my exams went decent, its summer and everyone is somewhat preparing for university apart from me because if exeter reject my adjustment offer i have no idea what uni I'm going to go to, because its the combined honours in a specialised course that only exeter offers that has me glued to them.... someone help

Hi I currently study FCH at Exeter with one of my subjects being Psychology.

I'm assuming you've chosen Exeter to be either your firm or insurance?
What I would do is go on the basis of which university you prefer sociology at.
If you do get into Exeter, even if you are not offered FCH in August, don't panic!

- For most courses, probably including Sociology, you are allowed to take 30 credits of modules in another discipline - it is likely that you could do these in Psychology if you wished. This could be a good alternative to FCH as long as you didn't want your degree to be BPS accredited.
- You may be able to transfer onto FCH before your second year - this is when a lot of moving around happens, people decide they don't like their course and so change. You may find that you can do FCH sociology and psychology second year onwards (and you could have got a taster of what psychology was like by doing some of your credits in the subject in first year!).

If you have any questions about FCH or psychology at Exeter let me know

First of all, thank you so much for your response. I have decided to go to Exeter (if i meet the entry requirements) as I honestly cannot see myself at any other university. However in terms of my degree....
What I would just love to do is 'FCH BA Sociology and Psychology with Arabic, and study abroad'.

Alternately, I wouldn't mind doing FCH BA 'Sociology and Arabic' (in my first year then picking up psychology in the second year) or FCH 'Sociology and Psychology' (and pick up modules in arabic along the way).

The admissions department keep telling me however that the FCH courses are 'closed' for home students, but for some reason International students can still apply for FCH courses. Another person from admissions told me to email on August 10th (as this is the time that they get the grades of students and so can tell me if there is any spaces free).

In worse case scenario, I could just carry on with BSC Sociology, buttt because now I want to do both Arabic modules (30 credits) and Psychology modules (15 x2 Credits) I have no idea what to choose!??!?!?!? :'(

Also is there any guarantee that if worse comes to worse and I continue with Bsc Sociology, that they will transfer me to FCH Sociology and Psychology in my 2nd year??? Can I just apply early to do this? And do I even have any priority.

The whole situation is just a pain, I'm a good student and considering I'm paying £9000 a year you would think they would let me do the course I want to do. All I need is someone to drop themselves from the course so I can take their place, is this a likely thing to happen based on your experience in Psychology? Do students ever leave the course?

Thank you.

It's hard for me to say whether people leave the course. Its probably just down to luck. Have you phoned the FCH office direct? I'm sure they'll be able to help you

Hi

It's a lot easier to change on to fch psychology if you are taking the non accredited route (which you are)- this means no psychology modules will be compulsory and you can choose whichever ones you are interested in and also what works with the timetable. You can change modules in the first two weeks of the term, i've known people to go from doing history degrees to maths so it seems fairly lenient.

One thing you should be aware of is that entry requirements for flexible combined honors sociology and psychology is higher than if you were to do straight sociology or psychology.

It's also unlikely you'll be able to transfer on to FCH Psychology in year 2 because year 2 psychology modules have pre-requisites and you wont have done the year 1 psychology modules :frown:

Also, sociology is really well taught, worst comes to worst, you'll have a great time studying sociology!

thank you so much for your response

Okay so.... For my a level results i was able to obtain A*AA (Soc,Psy & Eng Lit) and an A in a.s Media.

Based on my contextual circumstances Exeter offered me the lower scales of the entry requirements for single Sociology (ABB) so the fact that I did pretty good I'm hoping my grades wont be an issue, I'm even getting my psychology exam remarked just in case.

I've contacted exeter SO many times since results day and I'm just waiting for them to tell me whether they can or cannot transfer me. They said that it depends on whether there is space on the course (it sounded like there wasn't going to be).

I'm currently in Adjustment and have gotten offers from Surrey, UCL and Durham BUT I don't know what it is about Exeter but I'm just drawn in! I cant see myself anywhere else! So even if they cant transfer me now I think i'm still gonna accept there offer. Im just hoping that maybe i could be transferred during the first week(s) of september....?

I just reallllyyy want them to take me on!!! :'(

Are you a current FCH student yourself? You seem to have so much knowledge about the programme? Its all very appreciated btw

I'm currently a first year studying FCH philosophy and psychology. I'm thinking of changing my philosophy to biological sciences but on the website it says there are prerequisites so I can't go directly into second year biosciences. Is this true? Can't I just take first year modules next year?
