Best unis (south of England) for nightlife?

Just wondering what unis in the south (ish) are best for nightlife. I'm thinking to apply to Brighton, Portsmouth, Chichester, Bournemouth and ??? Undecided on last choice. I was thinking Canterbury Christ church? But I've heard there's no clubs etc.

Also.. I understand that nightlife is not as important as the course but I need somewhere which will entertain me as I'm coming from London! :biggrin:

Hi Chloe! I am a third year studying Dance at Chichester and I love it here.

Chichester is on the smaller side in terms of Universities, but I absolutely love it!! The Zee Bar (Students Union) at Chichester is award winning, voted number one for the events that they hold! This includes Foam Party's, Silent Discos, UV Paint Party's, Fancy Dress themed evenings... and of course the famous Beach Party's that everybody loves! The SU also holds Winter and Summer Balls, where they hire huge marquees and theme park rides, alongside fast food vans to keep you going :tongue:

There is a bus service on a Thursday to a club on the pier in Bognor Regis called Shieks, and it has just been refurbished so it's great fun. The good thing about Chichester is that it is safe for you to walk home after a night out, and you will ALWAYS know familiar faces when you're out because of the community here! I am in my third year and I have only felt the need to travel to Brighton for a night out twice, and once was for a birthday... I have never even bothered to go to Portsmouth but it is so easy to if needed! The millions of sports societies and teams that are available here mean that every week you can enjoy some time socialising with a group separate to your hallmates/coursemates and enjoy some socials before a night out.

Hope this helps. I would really recommend coming to see Chichester for an open day or taster day to help you get a feel of the atmosphere! I did both before I came and it definitely helped me to make the right choice :smile:

Wow thanks for that! Appreciate all the details. I'm going to an open day in a couple of weeks, I should like it :biggrin:

Oh also I want to study psychology.. any information about that would be helpful too :yy:

Brighton - very alternative/hippy and a haven for arty types/gay scene. Great for comedy and music. 50 mins by train from London. Recommended for a great student experience.

Portsmouth - lots of clubs/pubs/sport, town is home to Royal Navy so lots going on.

Chichester - very small, not much happening.

Bournemouth - its a south coast retirement town, so the students are a minority being under 60. Seaside town so has pubs/clubs but not as vibrant as Brighton

Bournemouth has some of the best nightlife in the country apparently... Lots of people go there for hen/stag dos.

I'm from Bournemouth and miss the nightlife a lot, as I now live in Cornwall.
There is a club in an old church, which holds amazing nights out on Mondays.

If you like bars/clubs then come to Plymouth. The uni has over 20,000 students here and it's in the city center, surrounded by bars/clubs :smile:

Chichester, yes. I grew up there and couldnt wait to leave.

Its tiny, so is the University, and whilst its a beautiful old Cathedral town, its not exactly exciting.
If you want nightlife whilst a student there, then you'd go to Portsmouth or Brighton - so you might as well be studying there, not at Chichester.

I don't know too much about the Psychology course unfortunately, but I have heard great things about it. It has a high percentage of student satisfaction and is based on the Chichester campus :-)

I think that there is a difference between living in Chichester and being a student here too... having been a student here I have never found it dull or boring! If location for nightlife is really high on your list of priorities I still think Chichester is a great place because you've got access to not only Chichester but all the surrounding towns too :-) Hope you have a lovely day coming to see us on Open Day!
