My friends called it Scumdee before I moved (they still do evethough they've never been haha) but once I got here I have to say that the city centre is MUCH nicer than Glasgow's. It's very small but it is really pretty and it's almost always sunny  I live 2 miles from the centre and the whole walk is basically posh houses, posh schools and I've not seen a lot of run down areas, however I do know there is some very nasty areas in Dundee where you'll find loads of alcoholics, drug addicts and prositutes, i've never went near there though haha. And as someone said above, you do feel really safe here because there's always loads of students about.

Dundee city centre is actually quite nice and very compact. The ned count is actually quite low, too.

The parts of Dundee to really avoid are so far off the beaten track for a student that it's hardly worth bothering about. You will likely never experience any of it unless you make friends with a local who can show you it.

^^^ biggest amount of rubbish i think ive ever read. Dundee is one of the poorest cities in Scotland. It's starting to get better now, but it's still a dump. The shopping is rubbish but i guess i was coming from Glasgow so I was always going to get a shock. In my opinion, it smells funny, the people there are well known for being quite odd and argh, its just horrible.

I'm from Glasgow too. Dundee is a much smaller city compared to Glasgow, and the city centre is so much more less stressful. In Glasgow it's generally fast pace with too many shops. In Dundee there's still plenty of shops to choose from but you don't have to worry about people bumping into you. Aesthetically, the centre of Dundee is nicer than Glasgow's. I don't know if maybe it's the constant sunny weather in Dundee and the lack of sunny weather in Glasgow that makes me feel that way.

As always, you're entitled to your opinion just as I am entitled to my own. So I hope you can respect that I just find Dundee a much nicer and relaxing place than Glasgow.

yeah i would agree its alot slower and more relaxing but as a girl who loves her shops, there just wasn't enough variety compared to Glasgow! haa. I also was basing my opinion on appearance, with Glasgow having very modern looking buildings - cineworld being among the best. so yeah, i feel dundee looks quite dingy but as you said, everyone entitled to their own opinion!

I don't think it's fair to compare Dundee to Glasgow, as Glasgow is the 3rd or 4th largest city in the UK and also not forgetting Edinburgh. They're both vibrant cities with tons of stuff to do, Dundee's a bit on the small side but it's got a good student vibe. Sometimes being in a smaller place when you're a student makes life better, keeps everyone a bit closer. Anyway you're supposed to be studying!

Dundee is in no way more aesthetically pleasing than Glasgow, I'm still laughing at that. If Glasgow actually got some sunshine people would understand it's an attractive very green city but because of all that bloody cloud it looks grey. Just don't knock Dundee till you've been there, I think it just gets such a slagging because it's an easy target.

was that about me ? ... how the hell am i sheltered ? hahaha! why because i agree with the majority of Scotland in saying Glasgow is far superior to Dundee in the respect that Glasgow is a lot bigger, therefore more to do/see. Glasgow is a lot richer, therefore is a lot more attractive. Glasgow is one of the best cities in Scotland and attracts a lot more tourists than Dundee does. So because i come from Glasgow and im used to what it offers, i was pretty shocked when i went to Dundee because its pretty rubbish in comparison ? yeah i'm so wrong its unbelievable ...

It is one of the worst places in britain and should be bulldozed into the sea
It is the most boring place ever. I've been here for a couple months being a first year and am already looking to do a transfer. It's absolutely dead. Nothing at all to do during the day. No restaurants or any kind of life. Man, not for me and I wouldn't go here if I had the choice like you do.

If you find Dundee boring then you're clearly a boring person, who doesn't socialise a lot.

I've found Dundee to be a brilliant city to live in, with something for everyone. I've never been to the same restaurant twice and quite a lot of new ones have been opening up recently, I go to pubs/clubs with friends regularly, you can always find places with live music or theatre, there's museums/art galleries, parks, climbing walls, sports facilities, ice skating; have you just been sitting in a locked room all day?

Sure, there's more to do in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but they're much larger cities! It would be quite unreasonable to expect anything otherwise. If you've chosen to go to Dundee expecting to find London city centre right behind the Overgate then you should have done more research before moving.

Ned?
I've been there many a time and wouldn't like to stay there..
Scottish chav.
Dundee has some extremely poor areas and a real problem with poverty but as a student, like a previous poster has said, you'd have very little contact with these areas. Everything you'd need is within a 10/20 minute walk of the campus. It's quite an up-and-coming city, definitely an exciting place to live in for art students, but the waterfront redevelopment is finally starting to impact other areas of the city.
