For the paper above I don't get why on Q 2aiA, mechanical energy is conserved- surely there will be some air resistance slowing them down.

You can safely ignore air resistance as it is negligible in every M2 question unless specified otherwise.

Here, the only work done is against gravity, so mechanical energy is conserved.
