i was hoping for some serious advise! it must have happened to otheer guys. I'd just been to the gym so maybe the endorphines from exercising and the fact I'd not seen my girlfriend for a while was the reason

Actually I've heard it's quite common for exercise to turn you on, which may have had you halfway there without realising. Still probably something to research though as it could avoid some embarassing accidents in future.
