Do I Have to Drink at Freshers?

Scroll to see replies

If you have just one or two drinks it will help a lot, otherwise it will be more difficult to make friends with your flatmates (or not, you might be put in a non drinking flat if the uni gives that option). Fresher's is mostly about bonding, and that generally happens via alcohol so it will take a bit longer to get to know your flatmates or they may form a clique before you get the chance.

That said your University may offer non-drinking events during fresher's which could act as somewhat of a replacement, not to the extent of flatmates but something.

You don't have to drink to make friends.

Be yourself and hopefully you will find the right group of friends.

This, sounds cheesy but it's so true.
Also I made a thread like this when I was 16 (3 or 4 years ago).

yes. mandatory fun.

nobody (originally) likes the taste of alcohol. nobody.
people just man up and get used to it because the ickiness is worth the inebriation.
if you haven't drank much before, you will obviously hate the taste - I used to be the same way
I mean, who do you think is going to snort coke and say "eww that smelled horrible - I won't do that again" on their first try?
...sorry I think I went too far^
...my point still stands

Wow, you're not the way I expected Jesus to be at all

the stories in the bible were heavily exaggerated. for example, the story where I turned water into wine - I just brought a keg to a dry piss-up and everybody forgot about the water. and the one where I walked on water - everybody who "saw" that was on acid.
you dont have to do anything but chances are drinking will sort of flow naturally. you dont have to be crazy about it though, everything in moderation. definitely helps bonding when people are a bit more relaxed and chilled out but im sure there will be lots of people with the same mind-set as you so dont worry! Just dont do anything youre uncomfortable with.

I won't be drinking during freshers (doubt I'll even leave my flat tbh). )

I understand not drinking since i don't like the taste of alcohol either. But why would you stay in your flat all week? The whole point of the week is socialising, not drinking. People staying in their flat all week is why TSR is spammed with posts about people not making enough friends in their first few weeks of uni lol

I've done freshers once, I don't feel the need to do it again.

I mean I'd go to the comedy nights or whatever but the going out and events at the student unions, nah

Hello

I will be starting university in September and I really want to make some life long friends and meet alot of new people.

However my main concern is i do not really like Alcohol i mean i have had it but tbh i just hate the taste of it all and i would much rather never have another drop.

Would me not drinking hinder my chances of making friends and getting along with flatmates? From what i hear freshers is all about drinking litres of alcohol and sleeping with 100 people. I love going out clubbing and parties etc and i dont feel that not drinking has any effect on me, i have quite a fun personality and i dont really need alcohol to make me fun to be around.

So really my question is will not drinking make it hard for me to fit in with my flatmates or will it just not make a difference?

Also im going to be 22 so will be a few years older than people but i dont think that will matter???

You'll be fine! Just enjoy yourself and relax!
You don't have to drink to make friends, not at all. The main thing is you get involved with things instead of locking yourself away in your room. A girl I lived with in first year was allergic to alcohol but made friends because she made an effort to go out and do things with people

Hello there  ,

This is one of the biggest student misconceptions that everybody has and a big question for a lot of people. "Do I have to drink at freshers/university/etc?" Answer? No! Of course you don't have to drink any university. No one is going to make you - there may be the occassional person or two trying to pressure you into drinking but at the end of the day, if a person doesn't want to be friends with you because you don't want to drink and stand by that choice, they aren't the kind of person you want to be friends with. At the end of the day, it's your choice and people will respect that and you'll make friends. Alcohol is a bit part of freshers and there is no doubt about that - but it's not the life and soul of making friends - it's the life and soul of making some hilarious and embarrassing memories, but not friends as such.
If you don't drink, it isn't going to hinder your chances of making friends. You can still join the parties and go out, it just means you'll be the one looking after people and remembering every hilarious part of the night when they don't - can be good, can be bad.

Don't panic yourself on this subject. It's such a small detail that can get blown up extremely easily and you'll end up stressing yourself out over it.
Bottom line is, you don't have to drink and don't feel you have to to make friends.
