What properties would a solvent need in terms of being able to purify a product?

I'm not sure what is meant by "purify" but I assume the solvent should be polar or have polar (dipole-dipole) molecules

In terms of using the solvent to extract a product, e.g. using a solvent to extract iodine from a solution using a separating funnel
