What are Foundation Degrees? Are there 2 types?

Historically, I thought that Foundation Degrees were the equivalent to A-levels? It is the course you take if you didn't have the correct A-Levels to enter a Bsc or a Ba Hons.


If that is so, why are there 1 year top-up Honours degree courses that can be taken after completion of a 2 year foundation course, meaning a foundation course is equivalent to a HNC and a HND or the 1st and 2nd year of an Honours Degree.

Example:
"Upon successful completion of the foundation degree students may also progress onto a third year and 'TOP UP' their FdSc to a BSc (Hons) within their own specialised field BSc (Hons) [subject title] (Top up) or BSc (Hons) [subject title] (Top up)"

A foundation degree is a level 5 qualification and yes it's worth the 1st two years of a degree and you can then top it up.
Whereas as a foundation year is a level 3 qualification that people use to get onto degrees if they didn't meet the normal entry requirements.
