Well, screw them. Everyone knows how integral Cambridge is to society.

Well, sum of them know.

Terrible social life, tiny provincial town and ridiculous amounts of stress along with stupid posh traditions just so you can say "I went to Cambridge". Seems to be the most boring uni in the Russell group and a total waste of the best 3 years of your life. Why do people on this site constantly drool about this dump? Places like Manchester would be far better and are still highly respected.

Looks like someone got rejected by Cambridge...
ITT lots of offended Cambridge students.

It's okay OP, I didn't get in either. :frown:

Don't know why people keep saying that, I've actually got an offer.

Manchester more respected than Cambridge? What are you smoking?

You won't get anywhere near Cambridge with reading skills like that

No, unfortunately not - I'm an international. :-( You?

Yes, but I applied in 2014 so I didn't attend this years. I didn't realise international students couldn't attend though, I am fairly sure we had at least one foreign student in 2014 (due to his flights he had to leave early). It is a shame that you missed it.

Lol mate well if you hate Cambridge so much then I sure hope you've declined your offer so the rest of the students won't have to deal having a peer with a ridiculous attitude like yours!

Manchester it is for ya then huh

No, in the end I declined. I did initially firm them, but ended up calling them (and my insurance) to arrange for me to actually change universities after results day. Both myself and my partner were accepted to the same college for mathematics, but in the end the partying and drinking scene were too much for us. And even though we were accepted to the same college, there was no guarantee we'd be living close to each other (which given that he has to do a lot of everyday tasks for me is a big problem).
I wish I could have attended Cambridge. I actually did attend Manchester, it's is crap! I really wish I was good enough to attend Cambridge. Sigh. Sad life.

Fair enough, hope you're happy where you are now! :h:

Well, if you want a good student experience AND a good degree, be rich or get a rich family, be genius, apply to MIT.
Greek life for the win dude.

Or be poor and let MIT pay everything for you...

Very, I spent the first few months wondering if I had made the right choice and I was filled with a weird regret. However I eventually realised that I made completely the right choice as Cambridge couldn't accommodate my needs (in terms of my health) at all.
It is an amazing University though, and you will have a wonderful time there (I have a dozen or so friends on the maths course that love it)!

Yeah, it certainly isn't "Cambridge or anything" and there are some stuff that are just more important than course quality, especially when the differences at that level aren't much to write home about.

If (big if  )I meet the offer, I'm sure I'll be very happy there.

I have seen you on the maths threads a lot, and I have every confidence that you can (and probably will) meet the offer. Good luck!

How large is the partying and drinking scene at Cambridge? I never applied there, but am curious regardless. I'm not into Freshers week events as well too to be honest...

I am not entirely sure, but too much happens where you live for me. I need to have space where I can be quiet, but a lack of clubs means that you will inevitably get a lot of drinking in dorms. Unfortunately my experience staying at the college I applied to was that the sound travelled very well (and I was knocked on 4 times for a drink, even though I was clearly a school student that was too young). It depends on your staircase really, and inevitably for some students the heavy work load means that they want to party heavily to celebrate too.

Also a lot of big socials happen within the college grounds, long late night affairs which I couldn't have dealt with (the May ball would have just been hell for me). Also things like college proposals (where you have a friend as a college wife or husband) would have been too much for me also, I don't want step out of my room and see people hanging banners from bridges while on another bridge people are badly playing saxophones (and yes one of my friends did this) at the college entrance. I don't want to step out of my staircase and see someone covered from head to toe in Nutella or waving banners and shouting.

I think these traditions are great, but not when I can't escape them as it is happening where I live. I need to be somewhere where I where I live, where I work, and where I play are distinct places. I need to have a "home" that is not also the place where people go to socialise.

So while the partying scene isn't particularly heavy, it is just the concentration of everything happening at your college that is too much for me.
BTW I am not trying to say that colleges are crazy all the time and that there is no place to relax, but just that for me personally it is too much.
