Should prostitution be legalized?

Not everybody considers sex an act of love.

Didn't say they did, just my opinion.

The literal definition of degrading is, 'causing a loss of self-respect; humiliating'. Prostitution diminishes the human body with women exploiting and selling themselves for a means of making money. It completely degrades the act of love and the women involved.

I agree with what you're saying but remember we love in a secular liberal society where sex has no intrinsic meaning. The only issue i see you could raise is that women (especially younger) may be naive and be desperate so easily tricked into joining before finding out its too late to leave the industry.

Do you also object to the porn industry?

Fair enough.

It's so sad that society has completely degraded the act. Yes definitely, will never understand why these things are even around.

It isn't.

Brothels etc are clearly forbidden.

The escort services that we do have in this country do not explicitly offer sex. They offer 'company' or whatever word they decide to use.

I beg to differ.

The escort services are clearly explicitly offering sex.

I know they say they are not but it's clear from their websites that they are.

As for the brothel question, my understanding, which appears to have been partly confirmed last night,is that it's illegal for there to be more than one working girl in a premises for the purpose of selling sex.

However I'm not au fait with the law but if that's not the case it does rather beg the question why the police are clamping down on brothels with more than one girl and not brothels, doesn't it?

Personally I think it would be even sadder if some men with disabilities had to go through their whole lives never getting laid.

Mate we debate Islam everyday on about three different threads at the same time, and yet I try and find something else to talk about but you don't think it's worth it because there was once one on another forum ages ago.

You might want to read some of the debate as it was only last week, for interest. Doesn't stop another thread.

Have to agree with you about the number of threads about Islam, or jihadism (I do not use the word Islam when discussing the murderous cult Daesh).

No,I'm just male.

I say yes: I don't think there is anything ethically wrong with prostitution in theory, and all of its problems are due to it being an underground industry. If one looks at the porn industry, since it has become more mainstream and acceptable, we've seen porn production companies run entirely by women who treat their actors and actresses very well.

If escort companies could be properly audited it would make them safer for all involved, and as the industry became more acceptable, prostitutes would feel less isolated and less negative feelings about themselves as their public image improved.

To those who claim that prostitution by its very nature is the exploitation of women, could you define what you mean by "exploitation" and explain how it differs in this instance from any and all exchanges it could ubiquitously be applied to?

To those who say it degrades women could you explain what you mean by "degrade" in a way that shows that it isn't just an entirely subjective opinion?

It IS legal......

Yes but legally this makes all the difference.

Sure.So it's largely irrelevant whether it's legal or illegal then.

Well unless we really want the police to spend a lot of their time booking escorts.
Which they would have to do in pairs of course.

Edit.Actually that wouldn't even work so they'd have to fit out houses with cameras but that raises yet more issues I think.

I can imagine every male* officer applying for that job:smile:

*and a lot of the female ones if my experiences are anything to go by

Pretty much.

The only change will be escort services being open about what they offer.
Yes it should be legal its the only way to guarantee protection of sex workers.

When you're a scientist or doing an academic job, you're selling your brain
When you're a builder you're selling how strong your hands are
When you're a surrogate you're selling your womb.
Why can't prostitutes do the same?

And sex can purely be for pleasure. It doesn't have to be love.
I agree it should be legalised because sex workers would be protected, which is a good thing. However, I personally do think something is "ethically wrong" with prostitution, mostly because I truly believe no one grows up wanting to be a prostitute therefore it's not a decision made upon freedom but rather someones unfortunate situation, and in some places people are forced into it.

There is a difference between a prostitute and other sex workers, a stripper for example has more choice and freedom than a prostitute.

But prostitution has been around forever, it's nothing new, so I honestly don't see it becoming more acceptable even if it is legalised.

Honestly it depends. If they love sex and they enjoy their job, then it is probably pleasurable.

Or they probably have a tough numbness to it and just get on with it because it's just a job to them and they're doing it for the same reason any other person would do a job; they think they'd be good at it and for the money.

There's a bit of a difference between a scientist selling their brain and a prostitute selling her body, you can't make that parallel. If your a scientist your using your brain in an effective manner, your achieving something by doing it. What do prostitues gain from selling their body let alone money? And I mean if people's pleasures are fufilled with a prostitute, their lives must be extremely dull and sad.
