Should prostitution be legalized?

I agree it should be legalised because sex workers would be protected, which is a good thing. However, I personally do think something is "ethically wrong" with prostitution, mostly because I truly believe no one grows up wanting to be a prostitute therefore it's not a decision made upon freedom but rather someones unfortunate situation, and in some places people are forced into it.

There is a difference between a prostitute and other sex workers, a stripper for example has more choice and freedom than a prostitute.

But prostitution has been around forever, it's nothing new, so I honestly don't see it becoming more acceptable even if it is legalised.

No one grows up wanting to work in McDonald's or spending 10 hours a day in a freezing warehouse. They do it because they need money...

Honestly it depends. If they love sex and they enjoy their job, then it is probably pleasurable.

Or they probably have a tough numbness to it and just get on with it because it's just a job to them and they're doing it for the same reason any other person would do a job; they think they'd be good at it and for the money.

It's for the money, I don't think there is any element of pleasure involved.

Yes, I agree it's for the money, that doesn't change my opinion on me finding it morally wrong. Also my reasons for finding it immoral aren't degrading reasons which most people spew up when discussing prostitution, I think my reasons are completely justified.

There's a bit of a difference between a scientist selling their brain and a prostitute selling her body, you can't make that parallel. If your a scientist your using your brain in an effective manner, your achieving something by doing it. What do prostitues gain from selling their body let alone money? And I mean if people's pleasures are fufilled with a prostitute, their lives must be extremely dull and sad.

I'm completely against street prostitution because it's dangerous most of the time. If it's escorting then there's no problem.

Why does anyone go into a job in that case including scientists? They think they'd be good at it and because there's money involved. Escorting doesn't involve sex all the time- it can literally just be dates and they'd probably get paid to be pampered.

As long as they're safe and happy, why does it matter?
yes - curb crawling *and* brothels should be legal. we should have a free society.

I was watching an interview with an ex prostitute who went into prostitution to fund her phD and is now a scientist at Bristol uni. She was saying she never orgasmed while she did her job but at the end of the day, the pay paid her rent and helped her keep her phD going.

So what is your reasoning? Because the fact that money being the key incentive makes 99.99% of jobs morally wrong or exploitation

The literal definition of degrading is, 'causing a loss of self-respect; humiliating'.
I am good friends with a prostitute and she actually says she enjoys it and doesn't feel a lack of self-respect for doing it, nor does she find it humiliating. So, by definition, in no way can she be said to be degrading herself. I'm sure many escorts feel this way, and the same certainly goes for a lot of porn stars. Moreover, if some prostitutes do find it humiliating, this is surely due to the social stigma related to it, which could be alleviated by it becoming seen as more respectable.

Prostitution diminishes the human body
That is just your entirely subjective opinion.

with women exploiting and selling themselves for a means of making money.
Could you define what you mean by "exploitation" and explain how it differs in this instance from any and all exchanges it could ubiquitously be applied to (for example, paying someone to deliver pizzas, where they are being used as nothing more than a transportation/delivery device)?

It completely degrades the act of love and the women involved.
This is almost exactly the same argument many people use against homosexual relationships or gay marriage (in that it "degrades" marriage). Why should the whole world have to adhere to how you personally feel sex should be?

sorry I'm just kinda jumping in here
are you saying that a woman who can't find a job should basically not be allowed to do what she has to to get money...? how does that help her?
No.
Yes, in my perspective prostitution should be legalised. However, it should be heavily regulated. No pimps, full medical (physical and mental) coverage with regular checkups etc, provision of support in terms of finding other careers etc.

Yes I think it should be legalized. It confuses me that working in porn is legal but not working in a brothel. Hopefully with the legalization of selling sex, the conditions would be regulated thus making prostitution safer. By regulating brothels and escorting services factors such as sex trafficking, pimping/forcing people into the job and STI's etc could be reduced.

I'm saying the opposite. Pretty much every job exploits societies need for money to get people to do things they'd rather not. But for some reason people only see that as immoral for prostitution.

So it's like most jobs then.

What a childish argument.

yeah sorry I hadn't seen your other comments - hence why I said I had just jumped in

I say yes: I don't think there is anything ethically wrong with prostitution in theory, and all of its problems are due to it being an underground industry. If one looks at the porn industry, since it has become more mainstream and acceptable, we've seen porn production companies run entirely by women who treat their actors and actresses very well.

If escort companies could be properly audited it would make them safer for all involved, and as the industry became more acceptable, prostitutes would feel less isolated and less negative feelings about themselves as their public image improved.

To those who claim that prostitution by its very nature is the exploitation of women, could you define what you mean by "exploitation" and explain how it differs in this instance from any and all exchanges it could ubiquitously be applied to?

To those who say it degrades women could you explain what you mean by "degrade" in a way that shows that it isn't just an entirely subjective opinion?

It already is legal for both buyer and seller as long as it isn't on the street or more than a couple of girls working together

I gave my reasoning, in most cases I don't believe someone freely decides to become a prostitute. You cannot compare prostitution to working at Mc Donalds because by saying that you're are undermining the normality of sex. An exchange for sex isn't the same as handing over a happy meal, is it? You don't reproduce by eating chicken nuggets, do you? You can't be intimate by eating a cheese burger, can you? it's not the same. Sex is natural, people do it all the time, by selling something that nature intended for you to do anyway most likely kills the pleasure and normality of sex for prostitutes. I believe it affects them more personally than a job in Mc Donald's does, even if they grew up not wanting to work there are purely do it for the money.

Making it out like it's just like any other job is wrong, it's not.

why not? the brain is a part of the body

what does a model achieve by modelling? what does an artist achieve? what does a professional couch tester achieve? if there's a market for something and they appeal to it, then surely they achieve mutual enrichment for both themselves and their market?

And I mean if people's pleasures are fufilled with a prostitute, their lives must be extremely dull and sad.

well that's their life surely, not yours? so why should prostitution be banned when it doesn't concern you?

Well exactly - thus the legalization of regulated brothels and selling sex within escorting services would hopefully be safer for prostitutes as they wouldn't have to go out in the streets or invite people back to their personal homes.
Prostitution itself is legal. Brothels are illegal but you could say brothels actually make prostitution safer in some instances.
