Apple Student Warranty?

My friend got a Macbook with his student discount and he was under the impression that it gives you a 3 year warranty, but the Mac is setting up and it says the warranty is 1 year? Can anyone explain this? :s-smilie:

Did he buy AppleCare?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure the standard warranty is one year; whereas, if you purchase AppleCare, you get up to three years.
