Which changes to a mole may indicate skin cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world, according to NHS Choices. It's important to know how to prevent it and what to look for if you think your mole is abnormal. Do people know enough about the incidence, causes, and prevention of skin cancer?

Of course, these changes do not definitely indicate skin cancer, but they may do. If you think you have a mole or other symptom which may be abnormal or cancerous, please seek medical advice from your GP.

Moles don't change size, if it did I'd be worried

I'm sure there are posters up in my GP surgery suggesting that if your mole does change size, you have to get it checked. I've got quite a few which haven't changed at all.
Remember it's a multiple choice poll, so there is more than one answer :smile:

I have just discovered I have loads of brown spots on my arms and upper back...
Apologies for the delay! According to NHS Choices, the correct answers are:

If it changes size, shape, if it bleeds, or itches.

Do you think we know enough about the health of our skin? :holmes:

So if you have concerns about a mole of yours, please don't delay to see your GP - the earlier the better!

"Moles are small coloured spots on the skin make up of cells called melanocytes, which produce the colour (pigment) in your skin.

Freckles are small, flat brown marks that often appear on the face or areas exposed to the sun. They are caused by an increased amount of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin colour."

I always think of it as moles are raised and freckles are flat :tongue:
