Yeah, it's the 16-25 railcard

oh, cool
It depends on your lifestyle and the kind of environment you were brought up in. £50 is nothing to some but ALOT to others. Depends what you spend on a day to day basis, like i spend about £3 in starbucks every morning and then £5 at lunch at a fastfood place (sixth form canteen sucks) but you might prefer homemade tea and homemade sandwiches and therefore you save more then me.

50 is more than enough, food will only be half of it and the rest easily pays for clothes and toiletries and a phone contract

Its crazy that £50 is nothing for me to survive on as I spend that in couple days.
I'd normally survive on £75-85/week easily because I'm about that :dumbells: life but
considering I don't go binge drinking every weekend/drinking in general it kinda makes up for it.
Do you think it would work out cost wise with the approach given above? ^

lol I'd definitely prefer to get a starbucks and buy lunch every day, but I grew up in a house where that kind of spending meant you couldn't afford the bills. Some things stick with you for life.

How on earth do you spend that in two days?!
Well i dont drink at all anymore (and barely did through university), my entertainment was instead nowtv subscriptions and cinema trips. I believe that £50 is easily doable even if you wanted a night out once in a while, £25 on food was the upper end of my budget most of the time i got it under £20 (meal planning for the win:P).

No alot of people genuinely would prefer homemade things - Plus i get what you mean, i was merely referring that to illustrate my point. Its the same with things like the gym, some people might have a £40 a month Fitness First Membership others might have a £15 Pure Gym membership or even cheaper run in the local park.

My point was that no one can really guide how much money is enough as it depends on someones spending habits.

Oh I know that, was just saying. I love them starbucks frappobeetus drinks :P But the cost of buying them regularly, to me anyway is madness.

I tend to stick with the old Mocha Frap  and yeah they are ridiculous, my sixth form is strategically placed just before a starbucks and the wifi in their is MUCH better than our common room. I hope there is not one outside my uni as it will definitely be hard to resist.
£4-500 would be a good safety buffer, however, you will probably need an extra 100-300 in your first few weeks for buying stuff you need, first big shop and freshers things (memberships, halls subs sometimes, trips, socialising)

£50 a week is doable but not comfortable in my opinion, it depends how you eat and live (e.g. being vegetarian or not drinking can bring cost of living down and having an expensive hobby could increase it), personally the least I've lived on is £60 a week and for me that was doable but tight (but I'm fussy about food and really hate sitting around doing little and have a lot of hobbies) but I had a separate budget for things like presents and clothes, just think on £50 a week buying your mum a £20 gift for her birthday means you're down to food money and not much else that week

We have a starbucks in our main uni building. Been here 3 years, only bought from there twice.

I spend £40/month membership at fitness first gym.
I will not sacrifice my membership there as its close by I.e 5 mins walk
whereas the Pure gym near my house is 30 mins away and isn't convenient.

I agree with the last points.

I'm actually at Durham atm so I thought I'd jump in and give advice. (What college btw?)
Are you self-catered? The vast majority of Durham accomodation is catered so you don't need to worry about food, and £50 a week is loads for everything else.

If you do have to buy food then I spend about £20 a week on food and I reckon I'm reasonably stingy but don't have a terrible diet. Maybe £30 tops then any left over is for nights out/ whatever you want.

Most of the colleges have their own gym which has stupidly cheap membership, but it depends on the college.
There's also a uni gym but you wouldn't be able to afford it on £50 a week if you had to buy food too.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the terms at Durham are really, really short- 11 weeks, 8 weeks, 8 weeks if I remember correctly including freshers- that's only 27 weeks total, just over half a year.

I'm also slightly confused as to how you got £50 a week more than the student loan when the maximum student loan is less than the price of accomodation at Durham starting next year. There's been loads of protests about it.

Thanks very much
St Cuths, and im catered on Parsons field hopefully! Oh i hadn't considered that lol, I'd factored in 40 weeks although I'd need this money to get by in holidays too.
I'd be interested in the gym but im sure the college one would be fine if i can afford it. I'm by no means a health nut.

Are the accommodation fees changing? I thought mine was 5500 from reading the website. The money left over is what I'd be living on- I'm getting the maximum loan i believe
