Non-UK student completely lost. Help!!

Hey guys!

So, I'm applying to do my MSc in England. By the time I started the application process, one university sent me an e-mail saying that I need to be accredited by the British Psychological Society. I'm finishing my undergraduate degree in Portugal, so I have no idea how this works.
Is being a member of the BPS optional or do I need to be one, in order to work in psychology? Plus, does every University ask this condition in order for one to enter a MSc?

Also, how does the Conversion courses work?

Thank you,

Marta

Call them otherwise, but I think the bit below is relevant

Advice to applicants/individual members

Until 2014, the Society has not had a process for considering international degrees for accreditation. In order to properly assess eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) based on qualifications gained outside of the UK, our Membership Team would need to receive an individual application for Graduate Membership of the Society following completion of any qualification. GBC is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Member of the Society (CPsychol).

All of the forms in relation to membership are online. All international applications will be assessed on the basis of either having completed an accredited course, or on the individual merit of the qualifications received, and confirmation of your eligibility for the GBC will then be availablable to you. If you have any queries about applying for membership of the Society, please contact the Membership Team T: +44 (0)116 252 9911.

If you are not eligible then you may need to complete an accredited conversion course. More information about these is below.
What is an accredited conversion course?
Graduates who have not taken an accredited programme in psychology may undertake a conversion course. Conversion courses provide an opportunity for graduates to build on their first degree qualification to become eligible for the Society's Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). The course will usually consist of at least one full year (approximately 45 weeks full-time, or its part-time equivalent) and typically comprise either 120 or 180 credits.

Applicants to conversion programmes must normally have a degree which has not been accredited by the Society (whether in psychology or another subject). For conversion programmes comprising 180 credits, this is the only entry requirement set by the Society, although individual providers may set other requirements that they expect their applicants to meet. For awards comprising only 120 credits, applicants will need to have previously studied the equivalent of at least 60 credits of psychology at undergraduate level. If you have not done 60 credits or more of psychology study, you can usually do a bridging or access course (often a certificate in psychology) first.

A small number of conversion course providers also welcome applicants who have completed a Society-accredited programme and therefore are already eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. They typically offer their courses in more specialist areas that may offer interesting further study opportunities for psychology graduates.

You can search for accredited conversion courses online.

Thank you!
But my problem in that case is that I only can apply after I have my undergraduate degree certificate, and that is only going to be by the beginning of July... only after that I could apply to the BPS and just after they'd give me accreditation me (or not) I could apply to the MSc, which would be too late, I couldn't start in September.

I don't know what I can do in this case

1. You need to contact GBP. They wont normally have this issue because degrees will be from the UK.. Perhaps they will let you fill the form out provisionally and give you an idea whether your degree will be given accreditation or not when you graduate.

2. Contact the uni admissions and explain you do not have your degree and you are waiting to receive confirmation about whether your degree will be accredited or not.

They may then say they cannot admit you on the course unil you know the answer or they may say we can reserve a place for you..

If GBP wont accredit you, then you have to do the conversion course, which can be an MSC. Check with each uni but I can see they will require your degree to be acccredited and this only causes an issue because its not from a UK uni.

Do you feel confident you cna explain that to GBP?

Non-UK applicants:

download and complete the appropriate application form and send it to the address below with the following items;

You should contact them. You have to get accreditation, but they may be willing to accept a transcript.

Be warned it might be they wont do anything till you graduate, but they do it on a case by case basis.
