Having jaw surgery for an open bite??

So, apparently I have to have jaw surgery for my open bite because my top teeth and bottom teeth can't close together so, there is no alignment the hole is tiny and not really noticeable unless I smile which I don't like doing because of it. :frown:

I am just scared of having surgery.:frown: is there not an alternative?

I have Invisalign(clear) retainers which I had for only three weeks. I don't see any changes when using them but I guess, I can't expect anything overnight for only three weeks.

Edit: If you have had a similar or the same experience, please post here-How was it like for you ?

my brother had it done his first proper memory is sitting in the uni coffee shop waiting for my graduation and then landing in Spain (we went to celebrate) he was very swollen for a few weeks and had quite a long recovery which he cant remember) but he was very happy with the result you may feel a bit sorry for yourself for a bit after it's done but at least you'll be able to smile again.
My friend got it done recently - i could not recognise her after surgery - he face and lips were extremely swollen - she had blood coming down her nose - she could not eat or even swallow ber tablets. But she said her recovery will take 2 weeks. It hasnt been the first week however the swelling has gone down and the end result might be worth it. Ill keep you updated.

My dentist said, i will need a jaw surgery.

I was surprised when he said that as my open bite is not that big.

He gave me invisilagin retainers when i thought i would need braces.

I had jaw surgery on my upper and lower jaw 7 weeks ago, this was needed due to an under bite I had where my lower had grown too far out. The first 2 weeks after surgery were the hardest since that is when the swelling is at the highest point and also the pain is hard to deal with. After that though you should start to feel normal again. I can now chew and I am slowly building my self up to chew harder foods and I would say the vast majority of my swelling has gone down. Good luck!

Most probably.
Im in the same situation, I have quite a big open bite due to sucking my thumb (im 19) and stopped only last year haha. They have given me 3 weeks to make my mind up arghhh im 50/50. I hate hate hate my smile and lisp but Im so scared about the operation and risk of permanent numbness and the long journey of braces etc. But I want to be able to smile with confidence and talk properly for the first time in my life.

I had double jaw surgery 8 months ago for quite a severe under bite and honestly I'd recommend if it they're offering it to you. I was really worried about numbness too initially but after my operation I was so happy with the results that I didn't actually mind if I was going to have numbness forever or not haha, I got all my feeling back luckily though and it feels like I never had an operation. The results post op will definitely be worth it in the end!

Can I just ask a few question???

Why did you have the underbite surgery ( for example :was it hard to eat / bite into things or was it cosmetic?)
How long did it take you to recover after surgery?
Have you lost any feeling in you jaw area?

I have no idea if I want surgery to correct my underbite as I am a little scared of the time off school and no sports for 1 to 2 months. This does not work for me as I need good grades as I want to be a marine biologist and I love doing my sports such as scuba diving ( which will help in marine biology ).
Heya I had jaw surgery on the 21st of July for an open bite. I had both my jaws broken (i also had a slight cross bite).
When you wake up from surgery you don't really feel any pain you just want water and the loo for some reason.
Emotionally its very hard, physically on the other hand it really isn't that hard, you're so numb that you don't really feel pain.
You get so emotional firstly because you're so swollen its hard to see yourself like that. You can't eat and I have found that enough food (blended most of the time) is a major key to you mental state. And you can't talk very well for a couple of week and that is annoying.
I was driving after 10 days so physically i felt fine, but I was so self conscious about the swelling. You won't need to take that long off school, I reckon I could have gone back around 2 weeks I would just be a bit arghh about the swelling.
Personally I think if you don't do it you'll regret it. Remember you're going to be in braces for around a year and a half so you mays as well start now.
Personally my open bite didn't really affect my appearance, of course it affected my smile and thats a huge part but no one really noticed.
But it is crazy how much I can breathe better out my nose before I was a mouth breather.

Just go for it you rarely will find someone who regrets it!

If I was in your situation I'd keep my open bite. In fact, I'd probably not stop sucking my thumb if my mouth was designed for it.
I know this is late, but at least you are getting considered for surgery. I have a jaw problem where my jaw has not only been pushed forward, but has also been tilted out of alignment, which causes stiffness in the neck, face, ear and head, headaches, my jawline to stick out abnormally on the right side, pain and discomfort on both sides of face, clicking sounds in the ear, abnormal opening and closing of the jaw (getting stuck, deviation to the left upon opening and closing), crooked chin, tilted bottom set of teeth, oh, and among other things, an open bite. Yet, despite my constant attempts to have anything done about it as I have been doing since October 2017, no one has been willing to do much other than give me an MRI of the jaw joint and surrounding soft tissues, and a mouthguard which I now have to wear or else I will wake up in much discomfort.
