Proving SUVAT Equation June 2009

Attached is a graph of velocity against time.
My question is to prove that

s = ut + 1/2at^2

I start by finding the area of the rectangle, knowing that the area under the line gives displacement.

s = ut

I then find the area of the triangle

1/2 (v-u) * t

= 1/2 * at * t
= 1/2at^2

So I thought that the rectangle - area gives the area
being s = ut - 1/2 at^2

but why is this not the case?
