Why would a devout Muslim want to be surrounded by alcohol and music?

I don't drink to excess and certainly not to get drunk. Drugs are completely alien to me as is smoking and that is the way it will stay.

There are very many non-Muslim people who make healthy choices too you know.

I did not mention non-muslim  just saying the wrong crowd.
i don't go

It's so true, you either join them or get rejected. Props to people who can avoid the temptation.

Thanks. At least there's one person who understands.

Well, it's good that as a Muslim you accept that Western and hardcore Islamic values are polar opposites and should be completely separated.

People seem to be forgetting that lately.

I give props to those who resist, from my own experience a lot have fallen into the wrong crowd. It's fine if people club, but....when a lot of drinking and drugs get involved that kind of upsets me as a friend.

You can either be one of those stupid Muslims who gives up their whole religion and starts drinking/clubbing/having sex in the first week of uni because they gave into peer pressure. Or you can stand your ground and refuse to drink alcohol despite how much people will pressure you into trying it. Nobody is stopping you going to club nights without drinking alcohol (I do go to them myself) but be prepared to lose a lot of friends when they all say you're boring because you don't drink. Uni students put alcohol above everything else, they don't know how to enjoy themselves without getting drunk and as a result, no one wants know a person who is sociable but doesn't drink. That makes it very hard to fit in with people who only cement their friendships through alcohol and stupid behaviour on nights out.

I used to go to one or two non-alcohol events every year, plus a few club nights every now and then without drinking alcohol. The rest of the time I keep to myself, watch films and TV shows and perform on stage. If you're Muslim and you want to behave decently at uni, alcohol really isn't important and you can make do with going to other events. Strangely I don't know anyone like me who goes to club nights without drinking - all the other Muslims either drink alcohol themselves (in secret), go to ISoc events where all they do is preach the Qur'an or just stay inside. You'll have to find your own balance and work out what suits you.

I do think it isn't permissible to go to clubs either, even if you're not taking part in haram, you're still exposed to it more than anywhere else.

I can understand not wanting to be around alcohol - cos it's disgusting. But what I don't understand is Muslims who think music is haram - I LOVE music immensely and that's the only reason I go on club nights even though it means being around stupid drunk people.

I know, it's sad when you see other Muslims give in to peer pressure and start drinking. Drugs are even worse! I'm glad someone else realises it's fine to go clubbing without drinking, it's just a shame that no one else feels the same way. :s-smilie:

That's fair enough, each to their own. But like I said above, I love my music and dance so that's what I go for. Doesn't matter to me about being "exposed" to haram - for the same reason I still go shopping at supermarkets that serve pork, lol.

Well, it is a choice that you make! I can't nag you plus...if you like clubbing then that's something you enjoy! I'm not the most perfect muslim. I enjoy my music! It helps me when studying. There are people who will be against it all.

Music is haram. The main scholars have all agreed to this.
Whether you love it or not doesn't change its ruling.

There is nothing wrong with being around pork, it's only haram to consume it.
You don't really have a choice when going to the supermarket as you need food.
You don't need to go to the clubs, you go there out of choice.

Each to their own. I perform on stage too so I'm not prepared for religion to get in the way of my acting, dance and music.

Fair enough. But like many others, I'm not a perfect Muslim - I choose to ignore whatever the rulings say about music.

Well that is your choice.
That will be between you and Allah only on the Day of Judgement when he questions you.

Same with alcohol - nothing wrong with being around it but it's haram to consume it. I would argue that I do need to go to a club every now and then to enjoy myself and socialise, as long as I don't drink alcohol.

I suppose you just come from a different school of thought to mine.
Staying away from drugs and alcohol is easy af , considering im as introverted as it gets.

Ok you sound like you're getting judgmental so I'm just gonna leave it there.

Nope. There's actually a hadith on this

It was narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (SAW) said: “Whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day, let him not sit at a table where wine is being drunk.”

That proves it's the atmosphere as well.
It's not just because there's alcohol, it's also because free mixing and dancing takes place there.

I'm sure your uni does other good events where you can enjoy yourself?

All 4 schools of thought say the same thing.
I guess it just depends on the individual.

I said 'your choice' and 'between you and Allah only'.
Hardly judgemental.
