Mech Eng Southampton vs Surrey

So I like both courses (applying for Mechanical with automotive at so'ton and just Mech eng at surrey) but both have pros and cons... I intend to work in the automotive industry so that is also important to me.

Southampton: - Can specialise in final two years
- Was 5th in 2016 tables
- Only asking for A*A
- Apparently awards a lot more firsts.

Surrey : - Almost twice as close to home but was 15th on 2016 tables
- Has direct links to McLaren!!
- UCAS offer day was very nice, had a kind/welcoming atmosphere
- Pretty much closed campus so everything is nearby
- Close to London
-Asking for AAA
-High student satisfaction rating
- Would have to transfer to full Automotive eng degree if i want that.

Does anyone have any other points which could help me make a decision?

Any advice welcome!

Don't base your decision on tables. Different tables rank the same unis differently, and the unis can change from to year (as you have seen). And different tables may be prioritising things that aren't relevant to you. They are both good universities.

On Firsts, the Southampton sample size is v v small. I would expect them to be similar in practice.

Also, how important is the fact that Southampton is a Russell Group university. I understand that they have more funding for research and stuff but how significant would that be?

Surrey sounds a lot better tbh. And I don't think rankings matter if it's not Oxbridge or Imperial for engineering.

Not...

BTW Surrey is above Southampton in the latest rankings (just goes to show you shouldn't use rankings as the sole measure.)

Lol a lot of hate for Soton, I go to Soton, it's a pretty good uni imo (atleast for aero), I chose it mainly for its facilities as the engineering department is pretty big, we have a new engineering only campus now as well so pretty much have ton of workshop spaces where you just walk in and do your own stuff. I will also say look at course content of what's offered by the two uni's and think which one you like the best.
