Norman Finkelstein defends Naz Shah's reposting of his meme

Apparently the meme about Israel posted by Naz Shah was originally found on Norman Finkelstein's website, though he claims he didn't make it himself. Finkelstein recently gave an interview to OpenDemocracy on this topic, defending Shah and Ken Livingstone. Well worth a read.

I loved his book The Holocaust Industry - very thought provoking.

I loved his book The Holocaust Industry - very thought provoking.

it provoked these thoughts among Shoah scholars:

University of Chicago Professor Peter Novick, whose work Finkelstein described as providing the "initial stimulus" for The Holocaust Industry, asserted in the July 28, 2000 Jewish Chronicle (London) that the book is replete with "false accusations", "egregious misrepresentations", "absurd claims" and "repeated mis-statements" ("A charge into darkness that sheds no light")

German historian Hans Mommsen called it "a most trivial book, which appeals to easily aroused anti-Semitic prejudices."

Wolfgang Benz stated to Le Monde: "It is impossible to learn anything from Finkelstein's book. At best, it is interesting for a psychotherapist."

Raul Hilberg, on the other hand, praised the book and said that he "totally agree[d] with Finkelstein's breakthrough". In later interviews, he continued to hold that Finkelstein was "one hundred percent correct" with regard to his claims about Swiss and German banks, and "I would say that his place in the whole history of writing history is assured, and that those who in the end are proven right triumph, and he will be among those who will have triumphed, albeit, it so seems, at great cost."

Enjoying the literature for what it is isn't the same as saying you liked the content, it's a de facto endorsement of antisemitism.

I think its important to explore situations from alternative perspectives.

Finklestein is an american jew who lost - with the exception of his parents - every single member of his family on both sides in the holocaust.

Therefore, his writing and stance on Palestine / Israel as well as the Holocaust are very interesting to me. I like how he is not afraid to talk about controversial issues and expose that which certain people are afraid to get out into the media.

He is called a self-hating jew simply because he has a different perspective and is not afraid to shed some light onto it.

David Icke isn't controversial, he's pretty much universally regarded as a nutcase with nothing of value to say. "Controversy" implies some level of public or specialist dispute over the topic.

Why is it automatically anti-semetic if it is critical of Jews and/or Israel?

Which just proves that there is a large enough audience of idiots to make a demand for that kind of thing. There are, sadly, plenty of professional creatinist writers who happen to make a tidy income from their writings. Doesn't change the fact that they are not, as they would like to think, "controversial", just badly wrong.

I agree that the athletic supplements industry can sometimes make dubious claims, but creatine has been scientifically proven to have a positive effect in high-intensity anaerobic repetitive work.

I've read religious books and have liked them before, but at the same time, I am still an atheist. Am I endorsing religion? I don't think I am, rather I am attempting to understand the argument for the other side. I think it important we always challenge our views, especially on controversial topics
