Nursing 2016

I have been offered a place at Queens for Learning Disability nursing however I initially wanted to do adult nursing and I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can do learning disability for one year then transfer if you do not like it as I know that the first year of all nursing courses is the same modules then you specialise in the second year. I have considered LD nursing, but the lack of job opportunities after qualification puts me off it?

No. Queens don't generally let you do this as it needs to be a swap with someone who wants to go from adult to learning disability.
Queens is also one of the very few years that first and third years are the same for all fields. Not all nursing courses are like this.
However, please don't be thinking that there are no jobs afterwards. There are plenty. The southern trust had been seconding learning disability nurses to become health visitors.
Equally, in England, there is a lot more scope for jobs.
You can work in schools, prisons, nursing homes, hospitals as a liason nurse as well as being placed on wards and theatres and recovery.
There are so many areas you can work as a learning disability nurse so please don't let people put you off.
It's an amazing field.

I wasn't aware of them opportunities makes it a little less scary deciding on what to do now thank you! I'm just unsure whether or not I should give it a try or do a fdn degree and go into second year of nursing in UU and do the field I initially want to do! Hoping they get back to me soon about the transfer in second year 😬
