There were some people on a train.

19 people get off on the train.

17 people get it on on the train.

Now there are 63 people on the train.

How many people were on the train to begin with?
I got 65...

4 you little smartass.

Trick questions don't have much to do with simple mathematics. Because they rely on the wording of the question trying to trick people.

lol I was like "65" then looked for some devious trick
To be fair, I reckon 0 people were on the train to begin with.

Seriously, I'm surprised someone who can't work this out even manages to put their socks on in the morning. :/

I do not understand how anyone can get this wrong.

Unless they have dyscalcula. Or are bad at maths.

Problems like this that seem "too easy" always make me nervous there's some trick I'm missing.

As someone says above, there were 0 people to begin with or 1 if you include the driver :holmes:.

Spoiler

Wrong! Answer is obviously 46.

:colone:
I worked it out the long way round, then I realised you can just take away 17 from 19 and add the difference on to the current number. :sigh:

It really messes with your head when the internet comes up with all kinds of alternative answers :afraid:
There were some people on a train.

19 people get off the train at the first stop.

If that was the first stop HOW DID THEY GET ON THE TRAIN?????

Meh. I have (probably wrongly) little respect for primary school maths teachers so I just ignored the 46 thing as clearly being rubbish

"The 19 is a red herring"

I got it wrong (really). :ashamed2:

I took 2 away from 63 rather than add at first so I got 61 XD
1+1= window
2+2 = fish
3+3 = 8
x - 19 = y

y + 17 = 63
