French grammar question

Why is when I was 10 years old in french @ Quand j'avais dix ans
Wouldn't it be quand j'etais dix ans (accent aigu on the e in etais)

"Quand j'avais 10 ans" is correct
In english you say "I AM x year old" and in french "j'AI x ans" litteraly "I have x year old"
It is supposed to mean that you have x years behind you ^^

Hahaha I find pretty logical to say "I have" instead of "I am" tbh :mmm:
