For the family losing its functions you talk about Functionalism and Parson's functional fit theory:

In pre-industrial society, the extended three-generational family was a multi-functional unit; it was a unit of both consumption AND production as they all lived together and worked on agriculture in their own village.

Movement from pre-industrial to modern industrial society has meant that the geographically and socially mobile workforce is needed. This is where the two-generational nuclear family steps in. The nuclear family has lost functions and has boiled down to two irreducible functions:
-Socialisation of the young: teaching them the norms and values so that they are equipped with the skills needed to enter the workforce.
-Stabilisation of adult personalities: when workers return home they can release their anger and tension, enabling them to return to work the next day feeling refreshed and ready to work - it is functional for the economy.

I don't think it would come up as a 24 marker though - there isn't enough to write.

Oh think I get it
What would you write for the family not losing its functions.....if it's an assess question

What does the role of education do?

You can do it both ways, bear in mind this is just how I have been taught it, if you have learned a different way stick with it.
For family losing it functions i would personally talk about functionalists and new right saying it has not lost its functions as murdock studied 250 societies blah blah. And then i would say On the other hand, Marxists, feminists and social policy all show support for the fam losing its functions, reason being for social policy, institutions such as the NHS have taken over the medical side of family and the welfare state helps with the ecomic etc..
Hope this helps/clears anything up.. also I feel completly ****ed for this exam XD

It was asked in June 2010 'assess the view that, in today's society, the family is losing its functions'
Can someone confirm is this is enough? For the paper 1? Please!!!

This is for family and households right? Cos unless ive learned random content, you dont have moderism, post modernism etc??
marxism and roles and relationships have a good chance but so does demography so it's really hard to predict

A lot of people seem to think demography or feminism will come up, I'd say feminism has a high chance since its never come up before

Considering it came up 5 years ago I'd say it has a higher chance of coming up than Functionalism or Marxism

when we say feminism are we talking about family theories?

e.g. 'using material from item b and elsewhere, assess the contribution of feminist theories / feminist sociologists to our understanding if the family' (24m)

Life is about risks
Revising theories of the family
Couples and demography
Not touching diversity...it's a risk but ah well lol
