Unclear Stoichiometry question

I came across this question in Edexcel's chemistry January 2014 (IAL) unit 1 paper, "When 0.1 mol of atoms of an element reacts with chlorine, there is an increase inmass of 7.1 g,The element could be:
A carbon.B sodium.C magnesium.D aluminium."

I just can't think of a way to approach this question and find a solution (apparently it is Mg), HELPPPPP PLEASE.

Calculate moles of chlorine from mass increase.
Now you nave mole ratio of the element to chlorine in the compound and can compare with the choices in the question ...
