What is bromine water used for?

To check for the amount of unsaturation in alkenes (breaks the C=C bond). If the bromine water turns from orange to colourless, then an alkene is present.

Test for unsaturation / differentiate between saturated/unsaturated fat or alkanes/alkenes.

- Add Bromine water to compound
- If it decolourises, it is an alkene/unsaturated

The Br reacts with the compound and opens up the double bond so it decolourises.

I only have pros/cons of poly(ethene) bags as a question but I think it's already been answered :/

To test if the substance is an alkane or alkene. It stays orange if its saturated, turns colourless if unsaturated.

A con of plastic bags are that they arent biodegradable, cause visual pollution when littered, take up landfill space and are not sustainable.

Using only the revision guide is a bad idea
The REVISION GUIDE WAS MADE IN 2011!!!
The Specification was made in 2014!!!
- new topics have arose since then and old ones removed
- the exam board make the specification whereas the CGP guide was made by a 'Independent company'
*see what i did there with the pun xD
