UK the third most welcoming country for refugees

The people of China, Germany and the UK are the most welcoming to refugees in the world, according to an Amnesty International survey on attitudes towards those fleeing war and persecution.

In a global survey of 27,000 people across 27 countries, nearly 70% said their governments should being doing more to help refugees, while 80% said they would accept refugees living in their country, city, or neighbourhood.

One in 10 would welcome a refugee to live in their own home, with the figure rising to 46% in China and 29% in the UK.

The overwhelming majority 86% of the world’s refugees do not live in industrialised nations, but are hosted in developing countries, usually close to the one they fled. In those countries, attitudes to asylum seekers are overwhelmingly positive, according to the Amnesty research.

In Jordan, a country that already hosts 650,000 Syrian refugees, 84% of people believe their government should do more to assist refugees fleeing war or persecution.

A quarter of Lebanon’s population are refugees and 69% of that country’s citizens believe their government should do more to assist.

“These figures speak for themselves,” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s secretary general. “People are ready to make refugees welcome, but governments’ inhumane responses to the refugee crisis are badly out of touch with their own citizens’.

“The Refugees Welcome Index exposes the shameful way governments have played short-term politics with the lives of people fleeing war and repression.

“Governments cannot allow their response to the refugee crisis to be held hostage by headlines. Too often they use xenophobic anti-refugee rhetoric to chase approval ratings. This survey suggests they are not listening to the silent majority of welcoming citizens who take the refugee crisis personally.” @Foo.mp3

No more. Other countries need to increase population, not the UK. We have plenty

Its funny how the people of generally poorer countries (except China) are less welcoming to refugees, although there is much more refugees from their countries.
29%?

Isn't this a good thing? Shows we have a big heart :h:

I'd love to see who they randomly polled (looks like 1'000 people each form the 27 countries) and what questions they asked.

I am happy for Germany to have immigrants. I am not happy to get a million in a year...
I thought right-wingers wanted those who care about immigrants to take them into their private homes. Because "if they care so much they should take all the responsibility and cost while I get to be selfish and be rewarded financially for it too".

But no, apparently that is wrong too.

Could it be that these right-wingers just hate foreigners?

One point of the article was that people aren't happy with how governments have been handling the situation.
Theres a difference between people in a suvery saying they would welcome refugees hwen compared to the reality of how many each country actuall takes as a raw figure or per 100,000 population.

The Chinese may welcome but they have not taken many

that has more to do with no syrians want to go china. its too far (across the himalaya mountains) and they get no benefit, no free houses and stuff.

China did took in a lot of refugees during vietnam and korean war and 2nd world war.
We should take in more refugees, especially since Germany is taking in over 1 million refugees.

You can take as many as you want, so long as they are in your house.
PS : Do you mean migrants?

The silent majority are ivory tower idealists. Let's see them house people from the Third/Muslim world, and take personal responsibility for them and their impact on their homes, neighbourhoods, societies and nations, then let's check back for progress :yy: (never gonna happen, in real tea) :tea:

I would love to see Fullofsurprises host a few military age, moderate, muslim male refugees. What could go possibly go wrong? :h:

Nothing.

Foreign males are not rapists. This notion of branding minority men as savage sexual predators is a stereotype that has it's origins in slavery in America where black men were tortured and hanged because of a misguided need to protect "our women".
Serious question for right wingers: there are lots of homeless ex squaddies who fought for Queen and country but now have been let down by the state and are on the street.

Do you believe that they are entitled to a house and dignity?

Would you be willing to take an ex squaddie in to your house?
Every pro-migrant UK resident should be forced to take one into their home or have their voting rights removed in the referendum.

I think China could take more if they wanted, because they aren't afraid to execute extremists and keep people in line.

The UK has democracy.

Do you even understand what that means?

We are all allowed to vote.

Reads as: government should ignore the mainstream media, reflecting public sentiment, regarding what to do about the migrant crisis

Spoiler

The more politicians ignore the people, the more xenophobia rises, the more you'll see reflective headlines - it's a vicious circle that will certainly not be defeated by ignoring the sociological issues thrown up by a failure to address the crisis. Again, unfortunately The Guardian (not uncharacteristically) fronts a self-defeating line of argument

P.S. Survey concerned refugees in general, and was neither qualitative nor quantitative e.g. as good as useless. Sure, most of us support some refuge. If 8/10 people support taking in refugees but only 3/10 would have them in their homes, what does that tell you?
