Ok, my bad.

Power corrupts. Power makes stupid.

And yes. We had this discussion at work the other day. A colleague and I started saying people are stupid. Which here, in Switzerland matters even more since there are regular referendums. And to be honest, most people that disagreed, did so not by saying no they are not, but more you can't say that, that's rude.

I like you.

Haha, I like you too.

I was reading the other day that, if a petition in Switzerland reaches 50k signatures, there must be a referendum held. On the one hand I think that's a decent idea - here we have a petition system but it's useless, and seems like a way for the government to gather the concerns of the populace in one place and utterly ignore them, while making people feel like they're being listened to.

But we've also had some ridiculous petitions reaching a huge number of signatures. I don't want to have to go out and vote every time the social media bandwagon decides that someone should be banned from the country, an exam was too hard, or some unfortunate criminal wasn't given a harsh enough sentence.

You're absolutely right that the main argument is just "you can't say that". The problem is that, when people are entitled to an opinion, they no longer need to justify it. So the opinion of someone who literally only read the Daily Mail is worth the same as the opinion of a professor of neuroscience who's been studying it for 60 years - sometimes the Daily Mail reader's opinion is worth SIGNIFICANTLY MORE, because social media allows us to amplify what we want to hear and bury anything we don't.

I think we, as a society, need to start viewing it as acceptable to point out when people don't know what they're talking about. When someone is unqualified and talking out of their arse, we should dismiss them, and then maybe people will start thinking before they speak (or vote).

This country is being torn apart by conservative cretins who think they know everything, hell-bent on taking us 100 years back in the past.

Michael Gove dragged our education system kicking and screaming back in time. There was no scientific basis for it - in fact, the scientific evidence, and real world experience - tells us that our economy would be better-off with a more liberal system. It was based purely on the whims of Gove and his followers, because it was better "back in their day". We spent millions of pounds to cater to the nostalgic urges of some old farts, and the education of our children is suffering because of it.

Theresa May, who has a degree in Geography of all things, decided that she's qualified to make complex technical decisions. She is introducing her "Snooper's Charter", a new piece of legislation which will violate our privacy by forcing Internet Service Providers to keep a log of EVERY connection our computers make. She claims that this will "reduce terrorism", even though computing experts and even top intelligence officials disagree, and say that all this will actually do is put our information at great risk - but of course, the old generation knows best, so she's been applauded by elderly technophobes. What most people don't know, though, is that Theresa, with her degree in geography, severely underestimated how much it would cost to implement this legislation. The cost could actually end up as high as £2 billion. While we sit here bitching about the EU taking our money, we're spending billions on laws that don't do anything.

But it seems that wasn't enough uninformed meddling for our government. They've now decided to introduce forced age verification for porn sites on the internet. How? Nobody knows - the government certainly don't, but they'll spend billions trying! Why? To appeal to some lazy mums who can't be arsed to monitor their own children's web activity, but who want their children to grow up to be miserable, sexually repressed conservatives just like they are! Fortunately the Conservatives have already been taking steps toward protecting us from the vile act of sex by banning an arbitrary list of sex acts in porn such as "female ejaculation", and forcing internet service providers to block porn by default so those lazy mums need to do EVEN LESS PARENTING!

The Tories' recent shenanigans include amending the contracts given to scientists so that they're unable to lobby for policy change with the results of their research. So don't expect to hear anything negative about fracking in the future - our government is protecting us from science! Of course, the Daily Mail won't report on this. And even if they did, nobody would care, because it seems that most British voters don't believe in science.

And let's not forget the "Psychoactive Substances Act", another legislative masterpiece hand-crafted by the great Theresa May. For decades we've been prevented from treating people with PTSD, depression, anxiety and other psychiatric illnesses due to draconian drug laws. We've been filling up our prisons with decent people. And an overwhelming amount of recent research shows that these drug laws don't actually affect how many people take drugs. But the British populace know better than to believe all that science mumbo jumbo! We've decided that the Psychoactive Substances Act is a great idea. A law that literally bans all drugs. Not a list, it just bans everything that affects the brain (except nicotine and alcohol, which together kill 106,000 people per year - but they're not evil like drugs). It makes scientific research EVEN HARDER, and the exact same legislation was tried in Ireland and it INCREASED DRUG USE! But forget about the stats, we know what we're doing.

These uninformed old morons are running this country into the ground. Young, educated people need to start voting.

If there was ever an age group that needs to vote leave it is the young generation. Housing, suppression of wages, future of the NHS and public services will hit the youngest proportionally hardest
young people can learn a lot from the older generation, who fought in wars and didnt have any of this pc nonense around. no, they got on with it regardless of the circumstance, they deserve every penny of their now measly pensions.

Wrong. The flat earth myth was (as the myth bit suggests) made up. Nobody thought the earth was flat. People who perpetuate the myth that people thought it was are monstrously stupid.

And I like how you write off an entire generation as mentally ill. Really cool.

Does that make you feel edgy?

One day you'll be old too. I hope then you realise how much of a colossal male chicken you sound.

I'm well aware that I'll be old. I'd like to think that it's an education or environmental problem, not an age problem, so that when I'm old I'll still think like I do now. But I fully accept that one day I might become arrogant or ignorant enough to dismiss hard science in favour of my uninformed opinion. If I ever do get to that point, I hope someone stops me from voting. I'm not a hypocrite.

As for the Earth being flat, it's not a myth at all. It's not a recently-held belief, but it was a belief, and it was held after the round-earth model was proposed. But fair enough, it wasn't a great example. There are plenty of others. We had hard scientific evidence that the Earth revolved around the Sun for decades (centuries?) before this was accepted by the public. There are people in the world today - enough people to compromise herd immunity and cause actual human deaths - who don't "believe in" vaccines. There are people, enough that getting any significant policy passed is impossible, who don't "believe in" climate change, and many more people who just can't comprehend the severity of it.

**** me, a quarter of Americans still think the Sun orbits the Earth, but nobody dares tell them they're wrong because that'd be rude, and they're entitled to their opinions.

Ignorance is a genuine problem.

This wasn't meant to be about the EU, but I disagree with you. The NHS and public services are doomed anyway, because it's our own government choosing not to fund them, despite a strengthening economy. Our government will continue not to fund them adequately whether we leave the EU or not.

I agree, the older generations more than earned their pensions. But some of the views held by that generation as a whole are dated and untrue. Fighting in wars many years ago doesn't give their current opinions validity.

You are right, just like they will continue not to fund the building of houses because it keep prices massively inflated. So importing an ever increasing number estimated to be around half a million people a year net is like pouring copious amounts of petrol on the fire

But EU immigration is hugely beneficial to our economy. They bring billions into the country. The problem is simply that we're not using that money to build houses and fund services. We need a new government, not a Brexit. Screwing ourselves economically isn't going to help us. We'd be far better-off staying in the EU and then voting these parasites out of Parliament in the next GE.

If we leave the EU and our economy suffers, the Tories will simply build even less houses and provide even less funding to services. They're the root of the problem.

Its not hugely beneficial economically anymore than our trade deals we agree upon brexit will be hugely beneficial. The only major difference will be the number of people in the UK accessing the same public services. I hate the tories but they are no different from labour in the sense that they are actively importing millions of people into the UK whilst not building enough houses just like Blair

Immigration itself is beneficial to our economy. EU immigrants fill skilled work that natives don't. They bring money in. Our trade deals with the EU also bring money in, and more importantly, the EU gives us more negotiating power in trade deals. Obama himself said that the US would prioritise a deal with the EU over a post-Brexit UK. Regardless of what you think of Obama, it makes perfect sense - the EU is a bigger market and a better trade partner. I honestly can't see us being better-off outside the EU. At best there'll be no change in the long-term, at worst we suffer.

Whilst EU immigration does indeed provide restricted benefits to our economy, what says we can't expand our economy by leaving the EU? The fact is, Iceland, as small as a country they are, have a trade deal with China... we are the 5th top economy in the world, not just the EU, the world. I'm not going to scare monger but do people really believe that a country that holds position 5 in the world economy-wise can't pull trade deals with other emerging global markets and do better by being unrestricted to do so? Because quite frankly, it's either that, or the polls are rigged... Regardless of what party you support politically, the case for leaving the EU is strong, and if you want the facts, you don't have to look far to find them.

Some immigration is beneficial.. not all.

Hey look here's 1000 illiterate goat herders... GDP GROWS WOOOO

Cos that means more doctors needed, more tesco staff needed, more bread needed.

Its simply not a net plus when you factor in the rest of the costs, nevermind the effect it has public services and the public purse.

Skilled necessary immigration only.. net contributors guaranteed

Obama is FOS. You must know that. Anybody must know that. Taking a politician at face value?? fml

The EU is still more likely to get a trade deal than we are, since the EU is a larger economy, by your logic. But it's really not as simple as that. Economics is complicated, and there's a lot more to trade deals than just who has the bigger economy, hence why Iceland has a deal and lots of stronger countries don't. There are a lot of factors involved.

But we aren't getting illiterate goat herders. EU immigrants are, on average, significantly more educated than British natives.

Anyway, let's not turn this into another EU debate. I fully accept that there isn't any clear solution in the case of the EU.

Telling them they're wrong when they disagree with scientific evidence? How awful. The young of today...
