NHS Scientist Training Programme 2016

I have a place on the NHS STP for this September.

Does anyone have any information about how the course is set out?

I would like to know how the academic MSc work is spread over the 3 years.

I've read that it's 80% on the job work and competencies and 20% academic work, is this correct?

Hello! I'm also starting in September in Genomics :smile:

I found this document on the NSHS website from last year which could be useful http://www.nshcs.org.uk/images/genomics_curricula_review/MSc_Genomic_Sciences_for_2015_16_v0.3%20120116_DRAFT.pdf Apparently you get one day a week to focus on the MSc instead of work-based training, I think some people didn't even have to go into the lab on those days but that would depend on your specialism/hospital.

I'm going to be doing Genomic Counselling so I'm assuming my placements and work experience will differ from yours slightly then, as counselling is more patient facing?

It's the first year they've done this specialism so there is no previous work scheme.

That's good that they give you one day a week for your MSc work!

I will check out the link you've sent me (thank you) and hopefully we can keep each other up to date with how it all goes?

Hey, I got a place on the Genomics course starting in September too! :smile:

Do you know which university is providing the MSc for Genomics? I know they hadn't announced it a while ago and I still can't seem to find out.

I e-mailed them about a week ago asking and they just said they don't have that information yet :/ hopefully we'll find out soon! Which hospital are you at?

can i just ask what you studied at uni and which uni you studied at before getting in the stp? and what made you stand out?

Hey guys

Could i ask how competative this course is. Is it like medicine where you need all A*s at gcse to stand a chance of getting in? Or do they not go that far and only consider your recent achievements (degrees etc)?

It is competitive, but in a different way. They look more at your degree and more importantly your experience.

Hiya! Im applying for Genomic counselling but i'm taking a year out to strengthen my application. Do you have any recommendations? I couldn't get a placement because I don't live at uni during summer etc im overseas but I have a 1st grade and I will be completing things like a counselling course and some experience in a caring role. I can't think what else to do! If you don't mind me asking what else could I do?
