Where does the idea that Man Utd are the biggest club in the world come from?

They have not won the most European Cups/CL... Liverpool have won several more even within the British Isles

Bayern, Real Madrid, Barca... all bigger for various reasons in the present day. The only way you'd say that Man Utd are comparable is the tonnes of mindless fans abroad.

I even think AC Milan are a bigger club... they've won 7 European Cups... That is more than twice the amount Utd have won.

They have been the most dominant club within the British Isles domestically but to most journos that must mean the whole world... righttt... It's the usual delusional media drivel that fools us into thinking we are still dominant on the world stage in club football.

The whole 'playing the Man United way' their fans bleat on about is the most pretentious and pathetic thing in football tbh.
Don't think they have a claim to the "biggest club in the world" title but it's hard to argue against describing them as one of the biggest clubs in the world? 20+ years of consistent success under SAF got them a lot closer and being the financial juggernaut the club is today helps.
Nobody says we are the biggest in the world. We say we are "one" of the biggest in the world.

That is down to United's success, trophies, massive fan base, worth of the club and the amount of money United make as a business.

Those are pretty much the main factors of making a club "big".

Revenue?

World-wide fan base?
Arrogance.

I've been loving these last few seasons though
Barca shitting on everyone as per usual.
They have (or at least did for a while) the largest revenue and fan base in the world. It's not all that much to do with their actual success.
We have Andy Tate.

I'd still argue Madrid are bigger, in terms of top trophies Barcelona have 24 la liga titles and 5 champions league. Real Madrid have 32 la liga titles and 10 champions league titles.

Need to see a list that only includes major honours.
Commercially they're miles ahead of the rest of the teams in England, which makes finishing 5th even more shambolic. Chelsea and Man City being billionaires toys evens the playing field in terms of buying power for players.

Is the FA cup included in major honours or are we talking CL+league(as some say that their domestic cups are not major trophies)? In that case United are level with Liverpool(23 major trophies each). Barcelona have 29 and Real have 42. Milan have 25, Inter have 21 and Juventus have 34 major trophies.

The major honours (for England) are:

Top division league title
FA Cup
League Cup
European Cup/CL
Cup Winners Cup
UEFA Cup/Europa League

Charity/Community Shields do not count. Nor do Intertoto Cups, other minor European trophies or European Super Cups. Not sure on the Club World Cup but I'm assuming that would be a major honour.

Yeah Man U's figures are boosted by 20 Community Shields.
You could say that Villa have more prestige than Arsenal or Forest have more than Chelsea if you go by European Success.

In today's reality neither of them are bigger clubs.

So's Liverpool's on 15 and 8 League Cups and Arsenal on 14.
